We have received from the publishers a copy of the " Timaru and Oamaru Almanac for 1579," issued from the Timaru Herald office. The little book is exceedingly well got up, and contains a mass of useful information in addition to the ordinary calendar and diary for the year. As it is published at the exceedingly reasonable price of one shilling it should command a large circulation.

At the monthly meeting of Directors of the Caledonian Society last evening, it was , decided to give a concert under the auspices of the Society, on New Year's Night, in aid of the Oamaru Hospital funds, and a strong Committee was formed to make the necessary arrangements. It was arranged to offer two cups of the value of ten guineas each for competition at the annual gathering—one for the highest aggregate number of points in running and jumping, and the other for dancing. Some other business of a routine nature was disposed of, and the meeting closed. The musical portion of the programme will be rendered by the St, Paul's Church Choir, who have kindly Volunteered their services. Before proceeding with the business at the District Court to-day, Mr. James Familton, who had been fined for non-attendance as a juyor fit the last criminal sittings of the Court, appeared to apply for a remission of the fine, Mr, O'Me.agfcer explained that Mr. Familton had been absent from the Court in consequence of having been galled away to attend his father, who was dying, at Hampden. His Honor accepted the excuse, and remitted the fine.
