OAMARU SCHOOLS COMMITTEE.

A meeting of the Schools Committee was held List evening, when there were present—Messrs. Steward in the chair), Fleming, Evans, Gibbs, Headland, and Hardy (Secretary). The Rector of the High School and the Masters of the North and South Schools were also present. The Secretary reported that he had received from the Education Board the sum of L 730 for the purchase of If acre of land as a site for the proposed new South School, and that the conveyances were ready for signature. —It was resolved that, to complete the two acres needed for the site, the Board be requested to endeavor to obtain from the Corporation of Oamaru section 11, block LXXV., by exchanging with them an Education Board section of equal value in another part of the town. A draft letter on the subject was prepared by the Chairman, and adopted. The Rector of the High School and the Masters of the North and South Schools, eaah reported as to the absolute necessity for immediate repairs to the schools, the extension of accommodation, and for an increase in the number of forms and : desks. The regret of the Committee was expressed at their financial position being such that they were unable to effect the repairs. It was, however, decided that the Building Committee should examine all the schools and report as to their condition and requirements, with a view to an application being made to the Education Board for the necessary funds. The question of the apportionment of the fees received for higher education amongst the teachers of the High Schools engaged in teaching the higher branches was remitted to the Visiting Committee for a report. As it was understood that no official examination of the High School pupils would bo possible this year, the Rector was requested to furnish to the Committee a report upon the progress and present position of the school. It was decided that the midsummer vacation should commence on the 20th of December and last for six weeks.
