TELEGRAMS.
WELLINGTON. December 5. The mail steamship City of Sydney, from Auckland, on the 24th ult., with the November Colonial mails, arrived at Sail Francisco vn the 3rd inst., two days in advance of due date. A Royal Commission is appointed to inquire into the condition of the settlement at Jackson's Bay. It consists of Mr. Bunny, M.H.R., Dr. Giles, and Mr. Whiteford, R.M. The Commission is to visit the settlement in the early part of January. . « AUCKLAND. December 5. The Rev. A. Carrick, minister at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, recently from Canada, writes to the Star stating that expastor Chinquy is personally known to him, and that few men are more honored by liberal and intelligent Catholics as well as Protestants.
There was a great demonstration last evening in the temporary building where Father Hennebery is holding is mission. On the missionary calling on all willing to take the pledge, it is estimated that 4000 arose. Afterwards the congregation were asked to express their feeling in favor of religious education, and all with one exception arose.
