WELLINGTON. December 4. The Post says that the Government have abandoned the idea of strengthening the railway I'ne to the Hutt. It is estimated that to only partially do the work would cost L2O,QOb. December 5. A circular letter has been issued from the Immigration Office with regard to the resumation of foreign immigration under cerI tain conditions. Foreigners must be nominated by their friends in the Colony, and present themselves at the Agent-General's Office, London, and he will provide them with passages from Plymouth, provided they pass the necessary medical examination and find their own way su board. They must also sign an undertaking that they will conform to all regulations in force on board the ship during the voyage. Foreigners who are nominated and find their way to the Colony ( as ordinary passengers, without coming through the Agent-General's Department, may have their passage money refunded, Due notice, however, must be given to the local Immigration Office at the port at which the foreign immigrants are to arrive, and they will be required to pass a, medical officer appointed to inspect immigrants arriving in the Colony. Great care is to be exercised as to the eligibility of immigrants before they are certified to. The opinion of the Attorney-General having been taken as to the validity or otherwise of the late mayoral election, he says that as regards the first and principal point the members of the constabulary have a right to vote at Municipal elections. Mr. Gilligan's Tavern Estate, Wairarapa. has been sold for L 13,000. There are 2SIS acres of land, 3000 sheep, and a few horses. Mr. Hadfield, of Canterbury, is the purchaser.

December 5. At a temperance meeting last night, at which the Rev. Dr. Roseby, of Dunedin, was giving a lecture on Good Templarism, ' the Rev. Mr. Smalley, the Wesley an minister of Sydenham, stated there was ope nasty drinking shop in that borough which the ladies intended to shut up after the style of their "brave American sisters," The statement was received with loud cheers. The Selection Committee appointed to choose the fifteen to represent Canterbury in the rifle match with Otago last evening made their final selection as follows : Messrs. Appleby, Barnes, Buckley, Chapman, Eckberg, Fox, Gunderson, R. Hill, Hunter, Manning, Marshall, Parker, Pavitt, Warner, and Woodhouse. The representatives leave on Tuesday. William Hayman, for indecently exposing himself, was sentenced this morning on four charges to twelr* month*' imprisonment, to run concurrently.

AUCKLAND. December 4. The Shipowners' and Shipwrights' Association has resolved to continue another year. Two thousand to one has been offered against The Don being placed in the Auckland Cup. At a meeting of the Presbytery to-day, the Rev. Mr. M'Callum said steps should be taken to welcome Pastor Chiniquy, whom he could testify was held in high esteem in America. The Presbytery appointed a committee to me«t Pastor Chiniquy, and have agreed to call a public meeting immediately after hiß arrival. December 5. The Provincial Grand Lodge, English constitution, last evening re-elected all its officers. No salary was voted to the Secretary. A vessel has been discovered on fire in the Frith of the Thames, and is supposed to be the brigantine Oamaru. She was built for the timber trade, and left Auckland on November 19th to load at the Hauraki mills with timber for Lyttelton. She took in 125,000 feet timber. She is owned at the Thames, and is worth about L3OOO. She is insured in the New Zealand Company for LllOO, and also in the South British. Later. The reported burning of a ship in the Frith of the Thames proves to be a false alarm. The Naval Brigade went to the scene, and found that tlie fire was one on Kauri Point. A fire on the reclamation ground, near the sawmills, to-day destroyed a small factory, the property of Mr. Knight, asnhalter. It was caused by the upsetting of boiling pitch. The damage amounts to LIOO. The schooner Caledonia, from Samoa, reports that a large crop of copra is expected. INVERCARGILL. December 4. Several gentlemen here have arranged to collect subscriptions from Scotchmen in Southland in aid of the shareholders who have been ruined by the failure of the City of Glasgow Bank. It is expected that the movement will result in the formation of a branch of the St. Andrew's Society. BLENHEIM. December 5. The Hon. tlie Minister of Justice lias notified that the Examiner of Titles (Mr. Hartley M'lntyre) will be appointed Resident Magistrate here in the room of Mr. Muller. The question of holding a District Court sitting in Blenheim is under consideration. NEW PLYMOUTH. December 5. There was a large number of visitors, but the exhibits were not up to last year's show, neither in quality nor quantity. Tlie races commence to-morrow.
