MEETINGS.

NORTH OTAGO BENEVOLENT SOCIETY. The monthly meeting of the Committee of the Benevolent Society was held last evening, when there were present—Messrs. Falconer (in the chair), Collis, Greenfield, Gibbs, Hassell, Kerr, Macfarlane, Mollison, Milligan, Paterson, Ponayne, and Steward. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed, and the outward correspondence was read and approved. A letter was read from Mr. Greenfield, forwarding a cheque for L 3, the proceeds of the sale of a hogshead of ale given by Mr. Speight.—The Secretary said that the thanks of the Committee had been tendered to Mr. Speight, and a vote of thanks was accorded to Mr. Greenfield. A letter from the Under-Secretary for Immigration was read, objecting to pay an account for medical attendance on the ground that the recipients had ceased to come under the denomination of immigrants. —The matter was referred to the Barrackmaster for a report as to whether or not the persons referred to were immigrants. Messrs. Hislop and Creagh, on behalf of the Baird Relief Fund Committee, wrote, requesting the Committee to take charge of the fund, and it was decided to comply with the request. A letter was read from Mr. Hesketh, the Barrackmaster, urging that his salary was inadequate to the duties he had to perform.—lt was decided to increase Mr. Hesketh's salary to LIOO a year as from the Ist October. Tho following report from the Barrackmaster was read. Oamaru, November 30, IS7S. The Committee North Otago Benevolent Society. Gentlemen, —I have the honor to forward the following report for the month of November. There are four children remaining in the institution. During the month nine domestic servants have been admitted into the Servants' Home, all of whom, with the exception of one, have found situations. Seventy-four Government immigrants have been received into the depot, all of whom have obtained ready employment, with the exception of two forwarded to the Hospital. I have inspected the Society's cottages, and found that during the late gale three of the porches have been blown away, damaging the weatherboards ; also, that one of the roofs lias given way, and that the roofing iron, ridging, and spouting in several places required to be re-fasteued. Herewith I forward abstract ration return for the month of November.—l have, &c., Alfred Hesketh. It was decided to apply to the Municipal Council to have two Municipal sections in block XXXn. put up for lease for GG years, with a view to the Society tlic aiwue. The YisitingCommittee were empowered to have some temporary repairs to the immigrants' cottage effected. The report of the Visiting Committee with reference to the cases relieved during the month and cases requiring relief was read. It was resolved, That in all cases, where it is ascertained that persons on the Society's books have relations capable of maintaining them, the Secretary be directed to furnish the necessary particulars to the police, with a view to such relations being made to contribute, under the Destitute Persons Relief Act." Messrs. Allen and Milligan were appointed a Printing Committee. The accounts submitted were passed for payment, subject to the Visiting Committee certifying to their correctness, and the meeting terminated. CALEDONIAN SOCIETY. A meeting of the directors of the above Society was held at the Criterion Hotel last evening, when Mr. Sinclair was voted to the chair. The tenders for the purchase of the privileges in connection with the Society's games to be held on the Ist and 2nd January next were opened, Mr. James Markhani being the successful tenderer, for the sum of L3lO, for the whole of the privileges with the exception of the grand stand. Mr. James Bee moved that the name of Mr. George Harper be placed on the list of directors, remarking that that gentleman was the founder of the Society, and that he was expected to be in Oamaru before the new year. This was carried unanimously. The appointment of judges for the various classes was then proceeded with, and shortly afterwards the meeting adjourned.
