The Evening Mail WITH WHICH IS INCORPORATED THE NEW ZEALAND AGRICULTURIST. FRIDAY, NOVAMBER 22, 1878.

In compliance with the request of a large number of our supporters, we publish the proceedings of yesterday's and to-day's Agricultural and Pastoral Society's Show in eHen <> in one issue, and present it to the public in a convenient form for transmission to friends in the Old Country. We have printed an extra number of this issue in •Jie firm belief that the warrantable pride of exhibitors and others in the excellence of the airrie'ilturol mvl pastoral product.-' oi this district v.'i 1 i induce them to scatter it far and wide for the sake •>]' the report contained therein of the North Ota-go Agricultural and Pastoral Association for the yen: 1573. As we have previously said—and no one lias been ab!o to contradict us—we are second only to otie Society in this Colony, and that is the So-3!e*y Of Cauterbu'-y. Oi course, we ca not n\fjt:ct to vie \»ith th'; Canterbury Association at this early in the existence of the Ounaru district and its Society. Canterbury is in every respect happily situated for placing herself in the premier position in matters agricultural ami pastoral. The district is large. and the hunt is of good quality ; ami when the tVeili-'ies o; railway communication in such a Hat eonntv;. which may be traversed at alni'is; unhmiteii speed with safety, are added to the agricultural and pastoral excellence of the district, it cannot be a matter for surprise that the Canterbury Agricultural ami Pastoral Society's operations have be ui characterised hv' success that renders insignificant, by compirison, many of the Shows in the Oid World, whilst it puts into the shade the majority of Colonial Shows. But our admiration for the agrieult'iral and pastoral supremacyofCanterbu: y will ba dangerous to that supremacy. The position Cant.-rbury occupies is tempting to those who can reasonably aspire to overtake her, and Oamaru is engaging in a neck and neck race with Canterbury that, although it will create a-spirit of wholesome rivalry, will give her all her work to maintain her foremost position. Year by vear we are overtaking the most prosperous Society in the Colony—..and, perhaps, Colonies—at such a rate that every settler in the district may justly feel proud, and send to his fri en-Is tiie present issue of the Maii., which ail'ords conclusive evidence of our ivuiarkablu progress.
