The fifteenth annual exhibition of the North Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Association was commenced to-day under the most favorable auspices. Fine weather, an exceedingly large number of exhibits of the most excellent description, and a large concourse of spectators are adjuncts which always stamp exhibitions of every deserintion as affairs of some moment, and bespeak for them a foremost place in the events of the year. Each of these characteristics of successful agricultural and pastoral shows were present at to-day's exhibition. The weather vas fine, the number of exhibits large and th 3 quality of the highest order, the list of competitors great, and the attendance of spectators from all parts, not only of this district, b it from Dunedin and Other places, even larger than was expected. .Numbers of visitors from the country and other centres arrived in town yesterday, many of whom had some difficulty in obtaining accommodation. At all the hotels beds wero at a premium, and scores of people had to rest content with "shake downs." To-day, visitorg poured into town by all the various trains in hundreds, every train boing crowded with passengers. The town presented an exceedingly animated appearance, visitors, young and old, wonding thoir way through the streets, all bent upon soeiiig everything they possibly could before returning home. Towards mid-day tho street leading to the Show Ground was lined with pooplo proceeding to the scene of the greatest annual exhibition of stock, &c, ever held in Otago. The number on tiie ground was, of course, not large at ilrst, the great bulk of the people waiting until after 12 o'clock, when tho charge for admission was as usual reduced to one shilling. From this time the gate keepers we re kept fully employed, people pouring into the ground in one long, continuous string. During the afternoon there must have been between 2000 and 3000 on the ground, a large proportion of whom were of the gentler sex. As may easily Ite imagined an exceedingly lively scene v.na presented. "What with the thousands of spectators dressed in their holiday atnre, the grand display of stock, and the energetic manner in which tho buaiuoss of tho day was
gone about, a spectacle was presented well calculated to gladden the heart and bring a smile to the face of the greatest cynic present. Everyone seemed to be thoroughly engrossed in the great business in hand ; the relative merits of the different exhibits were freely criticised on all hands, and the decisions of the judges were eagerly looked for, more especially in regard to the horses and cattle. The greatest amount of interest was displayed in the proceedings, everything clearly showing that the residents in this part of the Colony are essentially an agricultural people. Although the day waa not observed as a general holiday, little or no business was done during the afternoon, the show and nothing but the show engaging public attention. Everything pointed to the fact that the annual show of the North Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Association is.. (Tie event of the year, so far as Oamaru and the surrounding districts are concerned. To prove the amount of interest, too, which is taken in the affair outside of the district, we may mention that all of the leading journals of Christchurch, Dunedin, and Timaru were well represented. This fact, though it may appear trifling to some, fully demonstrates that the North Otago annual exhibition of stock, &c. occupies a very high position indeed, ami offers a well merited rebuke to those members of the Dunedin—or as it is called out oi courtesy, the Otago—Association who apparently think that the North Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Association is worthy of but little consideration in the matter of the National Association, and that it should be content to play an indifferent second fiddle to that of the metropolis. The numbe.. of exhibits, the large attendance of spectators, and the tact and energy displayed iiconducting it, once more clearly proved that the North Otago Show- is excelled by no other in the Colony, ami is only equalled by that of Christchurch. Though we may be beaten in some points, we occupy the premier position in others. With a continuance of the same amount of energy on the part o! the Committee in the future that has been displayed of late years, aided by the progressive spirit displayed by our farmers in breeding and purchasing first-class stock, the North Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Association must always maintain its present prominent position, even if it does not outstrip all other Societies. To show- how the annual Show has grown during the past, we give the following totals of entries during the several years mentioned :—Tn 1807 the total number of entries was 142; in 1 SOS, 172; in ISO'.), 27S : in IS7O, 2:10; in IS7I, 272; »» 1&72, 395 : in 1873, r>.T): in 1874, 004 ; in 187;"), 050: in 1870, 717; in 1577, 983; and for the present year, 1035. To a very great extent, it must be said, that the increase in the number of entries this year over its predecessor is attributable to a larger proportion of the exhibitors having entered the lists for the private prizes ; but still there was a very appreciable increase in general entries, and with the prospect of a large number of competitors from north ami south showing stock and implements next year, we may fairly look for a still greater increase then. From a mere country show, confined to the exhibits of stock, : . c, belonging to residents within the district, the annual exhibition of the North Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Association hnsgraduallj grown year by year tini.il it lias become second to none in the Colony. The Metionolitan Show of Canterbury is its only equal in New Zealand, and as has been already stated in our columns, the Oamaru Show this year has a larger number of entries than that of the City of the Plains. We say this with no desire to indulge iu what Anthony TrolJope lias spoken of as Colonial "Blow," but merely to show how necessary it is for the Association to obtain a more commodious show ground, more especially in view of a national exhibition being held here within ;; short space of time. The creature comforts of the visitors were well provided for, no less than four large booths being on the ground, in addition to fruit stalls. Of these Mr. W. Maitland had one of the publicans' booths, besides providing an excellent luncheon for the judges and stewards ; the other publican's booth was under the direction of Mr. R. Richardson. Mr A. Familton had both, the temperance booths. During the afternoon a very good brass band under Mr. Phcloung enlivened the proceedings with some music.
About half-past ten o'clock the work of judging was commenced and carried on with energy throughout the day. the work being got through in a highly satisfactory minner. Before giving the prize-list it is necessary that we should offer some few comments upon the qualities of the various exhibits. These must necessarily be of a very brief nature, the limited space at our disposal and the early hour at which we go to press precludincr'the possibility of our giving a report of greater length. Thoroughbred horses first claim our attention. Of "these there was a far better show than there was at last year's exhibition. In Class 1, entires of any age. ih.:re were seven entries, but of these Mr. Dunbar's exhibit was not on the ground. Of the others, Mr. Richardson's Hibernian was a well-made compact horse, by Mail Train Roiiua (imported) ; Mr. Patersoivs IVrtobe was looking fresh, and Mr. Dodson's Cassave!annus looked well so far as condition we-.t. In section 17, entire colt, two years' old— Mr. I'aterson exhibited a handsome colt by Ilan—Little Lady, his only blemish being his four white legs, though he is possessed of a good strain of blood and plenty of propelling power, and on the whole is one of the most promising two-year-olds we Lave -ecu for many a day. Mr. Dodson's colt by Cassavelaunns has a neat-looking head, with good legs, but he was scarcely in good show condition. In section 19, brood mares, in foal or foal at foot, Mr. Paterson was an absentee. Old Envy was looking remarkably well, while Mr. Meek had a good exhibit with a foal colt of great promise. In class 20, for dry mares, Messrs, Fleming and Hedley had two exhibits, one of which was a handsome shaped mare showing a deal of quality. Sapphira was in prime condition, though her appearance was much detracted from by the fact of her legs being bandaged. In section 21, two-year-old fillies, the competitors were Messrs. Fleming and Hedley, Mathew Clydesdale, and A.' Paterson. "Mr. Paterson's exhibit showed any amount of quality, but Messrs. Fleming and Hedley's exhibits were more of the farmer class of horses. Mr. Clydesdale's foal, by Cossack, promises to become a remarkably fine looking mare. In the extra class Messrs Williams and Bentley had a remarkably nice hunter, which has taken several prizes. He received a well deserved highly commended. A. few good hacks were shown, but the competition was not so keen as in former years. The jumping events were wretched , displays, but the trials of ladies' hacks proved highly interesting. Some nice- ; looking ponies were shown. ! The show of Ayrshire cattle was excellent. : In all-aged bulls, the competition was ex- ■ eeedingly close, ten capital aidmals entering I the ring. The first prize fell to Mr. Steven- ! son, of Timaru, for his hull, Neil 1., bred in j Oamaru by Messrs. Fleming and Hedley. i He is a fine animal, of good size, and almost I perfect in every point. Mr. Gemmell's Champion, another fine 1 eis + , possessing in an eminent degree all the qualities oi the Ayrshire, secured second prize. Mr. T. Y. Duncan, the third prize-taker, showed a very excellent bull, as did also Messrs. Fleming and Hedley, Mr. P. Orr, and Mr. Robertson. In two-year-olds, Mr. Mitchell carried off the first prize with a compact and beautifullooking bull named Kakanui Jock, by Bobby Burns, who obtained the gold medal two years ago. To Mr. Chrystal fell the second prize with Sir James, by Tapanui, out of Daisy, a fine-looking and premising animal. The third prize was obtained by Mr. Win. Cavan for Young Brogden, a rather promising, well-made beaßt. The other exhibitors were Messrs. Fleming and Hedley, Duncan, and Gemmell, none of whom need feel ashamed of their exhibits, for a finer lot of two-year-old bulls could scarcely be wished for. The show of yearling bulls was also very fine, Mr. Peter Orr obtaining the first prize for a very handsome animal. A fine lot of cows were brought inio the ring, through in many respects they were not equal to what we. have previously seen on the ground. In many cases, the cows were in rather p<:or condition, as was the case with most of the caftlc shown. Still the show was a very good one, all the exhibits,' with one- exception, being fit to enter any line. The judges had some difficulty in arriving at a decision, more especially as cows in milk a li.l Coy cows were allowed to compete in the same cla.~s. Messrs. Fleming and'Hedley obtained the first prize for Miss Meek, a beautiful cow, Mr. D. M'Gregor coining next with. Susie, So excellent were
the animals sh- wn that the judges awarded an additional p hlj, Mr. P. Orr being third and fourth. The show of two - year - old heifers wa3 not good, but some of the yearlings showed a greater amount of breeding. Mr. Orr obtained first and second prizes for a couple of line youngsters. It was a matter for regret that Mr. Stevenson had not entered for the prize for the best animal in the yard, as the interest in the competition was greatly lessened owing to the absence of the champion- bull. The prize fell to Messrs. Fleming and Hedley for their cow Miss Meek, a beautifully - formed and compact beast.
In general cattle-there was a good show, Mr. T. Y. Duncan and Messrs. Fleming and Hedley in particular showing some fine cattle. For a cow in milk, only three of the exhibitors put in an appearance, the first prize falling to Messrs. Fieming and Hedley. For a pair of dairy cows, Messrs. Fleming and Hedley were disqualified, one of their cows not being in milk ; the first prize was therefore awarded to Mr. T. Y. Duncan.
In Merino Sheep, the number of exhibits were exceedingly small; the quality unexceptionably good. In rams, the competition was confined to the Hon. R. Campbell and Messrs. Parker Bros ; while for ewes, Mr. Campbell was in every class almost the only competitor. Every prize in this class of .-dieep was obtained by Mr. Campbell, and deservedly so, for a finer lot of merino sheep have never been exhibited on the Oaniaru ground. In Leicester and Lincoln sheep there was a fine display, and a warm competition tool: place, especially in the Lincolns, in which there was a keen contest between the Hon. M. Holmes and Messrs. Sutton and Menlove. \"o lioimiey Marsh sheep were shown. The show of pigs was not a very striking one. The show of poultry was decidedly ar improvement upon that of last year. In dorkings, Messrs. G. M. Brace and K. Baird each showed some very nice fowls, the former's exhibits taking our fancy. Ii: Spanish there was a very close competition, no less than seven competitors entering tin list. The v. ho'.e of the fowls were of excellent quality, and the judges must have had some trouble in coming to a decision. Of game fowls there was also a good display. Thi- show of bantams was also good, but the display of Brahniapootras was not of equal quality. In other breeds there were some line-looking birds, notably a pair of frizzled owls shown by Mr. G. M. Bruce; some silver penciled by Mr. Bond ; golden spangled, by Mr. R. Baird. white Cochins, by Messrs. Wm. Cowan and G. Paterson : silver buff Cochin, by Mr. G. M. Bruce ; and bull" Cochins, by Mrs. Alex. Kerr. Some beautiful pigeons were shown by Messrs. D. Moore, G. Fenwiek, \Y. AY. Dawson, G. M. Bruce, R. Allan, and C. Headland.
The display of dairy produce was really astonishing to behold, and the competition amongst the ladies was exceedingly close. There was a particularly large display oi butter, many of the samples of which had the merit of I.eing superior to last year's exhibits. In fancy butters we noticed some beautifully got up plates, and amongst them one by Mrs. A. Hedley, which was a work of art in itself.
The hams, bacon in sides and l-olls mutton hams, mutton roils, and trussed poultry were all deserving of much commendation, and, if anything, were ahead Oi those of last year's show.
In agricultural implements, single ploughs were only represented by two exhibits, these, however, being very well put together and finished. In double furrows, Jack, Steel, and Hendry exhibited a beautifully finished implement. In harrows, the workmanship was of a superior class. The drill grubbed made a very good appearance, and were of various sizes, adapted for light and heavy soils. The drill ploughs were extremely well finished, compact, and handy implements. In broad-cast grain or grass-sowing machines, there were three exhibits. An American machine, shown by the Hon. M. Holmes, appears to be a very handy implement, as it divides at the back centre and folds in against the shafts, to allow c its passage through gates. Wilkin & Co.'s machine is also a very good one, as is that of Dobbie, shewn by llassell, Son & Co. In reaping machines, Messrs. Jack, Steel, and Hendry exhibited three very fine implements of their own manufacture. In com ined reaper and binders, there was exhibited the Osborne. Walter A Wood, M'Coriniek, and Gammon and Deering. Each of these machines has been improved in many particulars during the past. A very handsomely finished horse cart, made by Jack, Steel, and Hendry, was the only entry in thi3 class. An American hay-loader a traeted a great deal of notice. A lawn-mower, shown by the Hon. M. Holmes, is a handy-looking implement. A horse-rake and Randall's pulverising harrow were also shown by Mr. Holmes. Altogether, tin; exhibits in agricultu al implements v/eiv very good, but it is to be regretted that O-liei local and jirovineial manufacturers did not compete. There were three exhibits of buggies from Robin and Co., Dunedin, of very superior finish. It is to be regretted that our local carriage builder, Mr. H. Kite, did not compete with his compact, comfortable, and hkdily-lh'.ished machines.
lii ladies' and gentlemen's saddles and other riding gear, as also in car" and plough harness, Messrs. Hodge and Jones were the only exhibitors, and the whole of their goods showed good workmanship combined with strength and careful finish. The exhihits of grain and grass seeds were very superior, much more so than those of last vear. In wheat and oats, the llakateramea exhihits were of first quality in weight anil color. In grass seeds, the clovers were particular]}- noticeable, Stemson and Leigh showing first-; ate samples. A fine exhibit of imported fruits by ft. W. Draper attracted mu h attention, as indeed did the. other extras, the exhibition shed being closely packed with visitors daring the afternoon.
There was a very good exhibition of drgs. more especially in the greyhound class, in which a large number competed, including Mr. Ronayne's Camelia and Mr. Rett's Queen Death, both well-bred dogs and known performers. Mr. Ivctt also had an extra exhibit in the shave of two of Queen Death's pups—Morning Star and Kathleen. PRIZE LIST. HORSKS. CLASS B TuOKOtTOHB'RKn. Judges—Messrs. M. S-udh. Ime, Wrirna'-p. F. "W.
