A pair-oared race on the Avon, between four ladies connected with the dramatic profession took place yesterday, and created great interest. The distance was half-a-mile, the stakes a ladies' hat a thwart. Two of the ladies were known as the "light", crew and two as the " heavies." The betting was in favor of the latter, but the little ones got away with a good start, and won by about four lengths, amidst the cheers of a large number of spectators. At the Supreme Court this morning argument in the case of Benjamin v. the Sun newspaper for libel was postponed for three weeks, Mr. Joynt stating that he wished to obtain evidence from Dunedin to justify the article over which the action was brought. Madame Tasca, the pianist, this morning opened to a brilliant house. AUCKLAND. October 29. A fire occurred at six o'clock this morning at the offices of Messrs. Hughes and George, solicitors, a brick building in Shortlandstreet. The fire is supposed to have originated in the clerk's room, but the origin is unknown. The place was locked up at five o'clock last evening, and there had been no fire during that day. When the alarm was oiven the fire had a strong hold on the in- : terior, but the Brigade was quickly on the spot, and brought such a jet of water to ■ bear on it that it was kept within the build- ' ing, and got under. The inside of the build- . ing was almost wholly destroyed. Mr. L Bader, architect, who occupied officos under the same roof, lost all his plans, &c. Messrs Hughes and George were uninsured. The building was insured for LIOOO in the New [ Zealand, and LIOOO in the Royal, and was [ owned by the widow of Mr. Rattray, draper. The Rotorua has arrived from Sydney. Her dates are the same as those by the Albion. ♦ ■ I TIMARU. October 29. . The Royal Marionette's Compamy opened I here last night, and had a crowded house. They will take well here. Mr. Gardiner is agent for the company. To-day being the first day of the Show of . the Timaru Agricultural and Pastoral Association, the town is crowded with visitors. The high price charged at the gates whilst the judges are examining the entries pre- - eludes the possibility of many persons being present. To-morrow reduced prices will be 0 charged for admission to the public.
