WELLINGTON. October 26. A Supplementary Gazette issued to-day contains a proclamation declaring that The Regulation of Local Elestions Act, IS7<3, is in force -within the Waitaki Road Board District. «, CHRISTCHURCH. October 25. A fire occurred at a boarding-house in Colombo-street this afternoon, but not much damage was done. The insurances on the building amount to L6OO, and on the furniture to L6OO, the latter in the South British and Transatlantic. At the Synod to-day, a motion in favor of the Church of England people being their own insurers was carried. It was stated that LISOO a year might be saved by so doing. October 20. The Lincoln Show was not so great a success yesterday as usual, partly on account of the small number of exhibits, and partly on account of the weather. It is suggested that the Ellesmere and the Lincoln Agricultural Societies should amalgamate, as they are too close to have independent shows of a successful character. After a long discussion in the Synod last night, a motion was carried that the re-es-tablishment of church schools was very desirable. A lecture by Captain Barry, given last night, on his own Colonial experiences of 50 years, was by no means a success from any stand point. Captain Barry stated that he was going Home to publish a book and give lectures on the same subject, and that he had already over 5000 subscribers for his book in the Colony. The Cornish enthusiasm with regard to contributing to the funds of the new Truro Cathedral appears to have evaporated, as last night not a soul turned up at the adjourned meeting. Some of our Volunteers intend to take part in the Volunteer encampment to be held in Dunedin on the 9th of November. Members of the City Guards, Engineers, and Artillery have stated their intention of being present, O AUCKLAND. October 25. A meeting of Katikati settlers, No. 2, passed a unanimous vote of confidence in Vesey Stewart, and expressed themselves well satisfied with their new home. Mr. Firth is engaged in distributing 200,000 Californian salmon ova in the upper part of the Thames river, presented by Mr. Baird, United States Fish Commissioner. Mr. M'Gee contemplates moving for a new trial in the action against the Jockey Club. The city accounts show the Corporation in a good financial position, with a substantial balance to credit. ♦ INVERCARGILL. October 25. At the Resident Magistrate's Court to-day, judgment was given in the case Harris (Dunedin) v. Osborne, a claim for proceeds of sale of property. It was decided that there was a good equitable assignment of proceeds of sale to Mr. Eddridge for salary as clerk to plaintiff, and that defendant, an auctioneer, being directed to so apply the proceeds, the plaintiff could not recover,
TIMARU. October 25.. Messrs. King and Co. sold to-day the inlet sections in Rhodestown, Timaru. # There was a large attendance, and the bidding was spirited. Some sections were keenly contested for. Rural sections of one acre each fetched from Ll7O to LS2O each, and quarteracre sections from L 260 to L 745. The total proceeds of the sale was L 12,070.
