MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.
•The fortnightly meeting of the Council was held last evening, when there were present —His Worship the Mayor, Councillors Gibbs, Humphreys, Mainland, Procter. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed, and the outward correspondence was read and approved. Permission was granted for the transfer of the lease of section 12, block 88, from Bridget Glassy to Wm . Barker; and of section block 53, from W, H. Clemo to xviajor Evans, Air. liuii'V-' •' \u Keiizie wrote, applying for a lease of the reserve at the waterworks intake, but it was decided to reply that the Council does not propose to deal with the matter at present. The Mayor, Councillors' Procter and Mainland were appointed a Sub-Committee to make final ai'rangements re land required for waterworks purposes. An application from Messrs. J. and T, Meek for permission to improve the approach to their premises in Severn-street was referred to the Works Committee, with power to act. , A letter from Mr, G, W. Robinson, in I reference to the state of the footpath in Eden-street, &c, was referred to the' Works Committee for report. A complaint from Mrs. M'Laren in reference to the fence in Glen-street had already been dealt with in Public Works Committee's report. Permission was granted to Mr. Mainland to erect an addition to his premises in Tynestreet. Mr. J. C. Black wrote offering to lease for one crop the S.E. portion of the Garden Reserve, undertaking to fence off and protect the trees. It was resolved that Mr. Black be informed that the Council does not wish to lease the land referred to. Three applications for the cadetship in the Engineer's office were read, and referred to the Mayor, Councillor Humphrey, and the Engineer, The report of the Public Works Committee, dealing with several matters, was read and adopted. Tenders were ordered to be called for carting for six months if the present contract lias expired. Accounts were passed for payment as follows :—Ordinary account, L 216 2s 7d ; gasworks account, L 36 9s (3d ; waterworks account, L 277 3s sd. It was resolved that the Engineer prepare specifications and particulars of quantities of piping required for services, to be laid before a special meeting, to be held on Thursday, 31st inst., at 7.15 p.m. Councillor Humphrey, according to notice, moved "That Thames-street be metalled, where required, from the Post Office to Coquet-street, and that the Engineer be instructed to prepare specifications and call for tenders for the work," Councillor Gibbs pointed out that before the work could be carried out it would be necessary to bring the street to its permanent level. After some discussion the motion was amended as follows, and carried—"That the Engineer furnish an approximate estimate of the cost of bringing Thames-street, from the Post Office to Coquet-street, to its permanent level : also an estimate of the cost of metalling the street temporarily, until permanent works can be executed," Councillor Humphrey then moved '■' That the Engineer prepare a plan and estimate for the drainage of blocks 4 and 5." After some discussion, the motion was amended as follows, and agreed to : —" That the Engineer be requested to prepare, as originally contemplated, a general plan for the drainage of the town, and also a detailed plan of such section of the above, as applies to blocks IV. and V., together with an estimate of the cost of carrying out the portion referred to." The Council rose at 11 p.m.
