The Evening Mail. SATURDAY, OCTOBER 19, 1878.

The Oamaru Baths are being exceedingly well patronised, and there is every prospect of a vei-y successful season for the Company. Up to yesterday 300 daily tickets for adults and 10.9 for children had been taken out in addition to family and season tickets. The great benefits which the baths have bestowed upon the public njay be judged from the fact that the sixteen days they have been open something like 500 people have visited them. The bath-keej>er gives great satisfaction, the baths being kept in ,a very clean state.

Suh-Lieutenant Morris, who represented Oamaru at the conference of delegates lield at Wellington for the purpose of forming a National Rifle Association, has just .returned to Oamaru. A meeting of those interested will shortly be held, when Mr. Morris—who lias brought with him a copy of the rules of the Association —will probably explain its principles and objects.

Services in connection with the Congregational Church will be preached in the Volunteer Hall to-morrow, at 11 a.m. and (5.30 p.m., by the Rev. B. T. Hallowes, 8.A., of Timaru. A church, meeting will be held after the evening service. ' In our report of the proceedings of the North Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Association's meeting held on Thursday we stated that the stewards for the shorthorn cattle were Messrs. Aikenhead and Mitchell. Mr. Bromley's name should have been inserted instead of Mr. Mitchell's.

A very successful magic lantern entertainment was held in Wesley Church last night, on behalf of the Sunday School library. The views (some of which were local photographs, and taken for the occasion by Messrs. Ferrier and Rock) were exceedingly good, and were evidently appreciated, as the applause was immense. The Rev. H. Uewsbury gave the descriptive portion, Mr. Ferrier manipulated the lantern, and to Miss Ferrier was entrusted the musical portion of the service, which altogether was a decided success. Mr. Dewsbury opened and closed with prayer.

The O.Y.M.C.A. Choir are preparing and will shortly give a new service of song, specially compiled for the occasion, entitled "The Old Old Story," the proceeds to be devoted to the funds of the Association.

The ship Timaru left Glasgow for Port Chalmers on'the'9th of August, with 341 immigrants, (equal to 308 statute adults) on board. The following are the numbers of the several classes :—Married couples, 39, equal to 7S statute adults; children of same, 51, equal.to 25£ statute adults ; single men, 122 ; cliild with same—!'; single women, 80 ;. widow and two children ; infants, 6. The Waitara, from Plymouth to the Bluff, is : following in the wake of the Timaru having left port on the 2Sth August, with 229 immigrants. It is to be hoped that the immigrants by these two vessels will be an improvement upon the last lot, a large number, of the worst of which still cling closely to' the barracks at Caversham..

The London correspondent of the Adelaide Observer says that among the candidates for the chair of English Literature in the Otago University will be William Black, the novelist, and Mr. Minto, editor of the London Examiner. -

Two magnificent thoroughbred brood mares were shown at the late Napier Show. They are the j>roperty of ex-Governor Fergusson, whose estate is a few miles north of Cambridge, Waikato. Both mares were im-i ported from England in January last. One is by the celebrated horse Thoririanby, out of Clothilde, the other is by Thunderbolt; dam Keepsake. : . . ; .. -. - : The Napier Telegraph says :—By the Taupo nine Merino rams were imported, bred by F. D. Rich, Esq:, of Otago, as a fair sample of that gentleman's ram flock for sale this season. It is to be regretted that they cannot with justice be shown as competing owing to their being dipped on landing, though it is understood they will be atthe Society's yards as extra. stock.. They are remarkable for heavy weight of fleece; not : so much for fineness as for length, closeness,; and strength of staple, uncommonly •welLwoolled under, .and of strong constitution, and well suited for our rough hill country. A writer in a Wanganui paper says that the proprietor of the first newspaper in Taranaki, in days of yore, used to' take subscriptions out in potatoes and pumpkins, He stuck out for meat, groceries, and general notions, in payment for" ads." He. only got coin for notices of insolvencies and sales by auction (when he was lucky.) He used to pay his type-snatchefs with orders on storekeepers for anything in stock which the " compos" wanted. If he did give them coin by any chance, he took care to have a game of " fours" with them on.the imposim; stone before they left the premises. 11.! used,to hold high, low, jack, and game with a monotony seldom witnessed except in v t ±-y select circles ! He was ruined through a fall in pumpkins after all.
