OAMARU SCHOOLS COMMITTEE.
The adjourned ireeting of the above Committee was held last evening, when there were present—Messrs. Steward (Chairman), N. Fleming-, and Headland, the Rector of the High School, the master of the North School, and the Secretary. The minutes were read and confirmed, and the outward correspondence was read and approved. The following-le'ter was read : "Education Office, Dunedin, Sept. 12,1878. " sir, —Your letter of the 23th ult., lecommending the Education Board to secure a suitable piece of ground for a school site in the south end of Oama-u, was considered by the Finance Committee of the Board at a meeting- held this day. I was desired to convey to you the thanks of the Committee for your suggestions, and to ask you to be good enough to furni-h me with a description of the piece of land, and the name of the person to whom it belongs. " The Board is alive to the necessity of seeuringadditional school sites in Oamaru and other towns in this educational district, but the providing of funds for the puroose is a matter which rests with the Government, and strong representations have already been made in reference to the inadequacy of the grant for this purpose.—l am, &c., "P. G. Pryde, Secretary. " To Mr. Jno. Hardy, Oamaru " It was resolved, " That Messrs N. Fleming, Gihbs, and the Secretary be a Sub-Committee to see,as to n suitable site fur the new South School, and report to a special meeting of the Committee to be called for the purpose." The Kector of the High School wrote recommending Jam.'S Bee for appointment as a pupil teacher. The reco • mendation was approved, and oidered to be forwarded to the Education Board. The following letter was also read: — " High School, Oamaru. October 11,1578. " Gentlemen,—l have the honor to report—- " 1. That for the past two weeks the Infant Department has not occupied the Volunteer Hall, and that under the following circumstances : —The Volunteer Hall Companv were in a dilemma, caused by a misunderstanding 'regarding the letting of the Hall. I was enabled to accommodate the Infant pepartment hi the High School, in consequence of a room being vacated by Mr. Fidler's absence, his class being taught by me and accommodated in my room. I preferred tiiis arrangement to that of allowing that department to migrate to the Waitakl Hall, which would otherwise have been taken for its accommodation by the Volunteer Hall Company. On account of the saving thus effected, that Company have placed a clock in the hall.
"2. That various repairs are requisite on the plumber work of the roof, tanks, and lavatories. ''3. That a permanent dray entrance from .Severnstreet onprht to be made to the school premises. " I. That the fence next to the Cricket Ground should be put in its proper place.—l am, &c, " Robert Peattje, Rector. " The Schools Committee, Oamaru." The action of the Rector in regard to the infant class was approved of, and it was decided to inform him that the Committee had no available funds at present to devote 'to the other matters referred to, but that they would receive attention as soon as possible. The Secretary was instructed to write to the Education Board applying- for payment of Ll3, rent due for Volunteer Hall, and Ll3 voted for the cost of chimney. Accounts to the amount of LB6 IBs 9d were passed for payment, and the meeting terminate 1.
