MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.
The usual fortnightly meeting of the Council was held last evening. Present : His Worship the Mayor, Councillors Humphrey. Gibbs, Procter, Mainland, Familton, Headland, and Rpence, The minutes of the last meeting having been confirmed, A letter was read from Mr. W. Collins, applying for a lease of portion of the Esplanade north of the now railway siding. —lt was decided that the lease for one year of the land in question should be sold by auction at the upset price of L2 per acre. ! A letter from the Attorney - General ; (Hon. R. Stout) was read, acknowledging . the receipt of a draft Rill re Corporation j
leases. A letter Mr. Fraser, applying for lease of section 5, Block XXV., having been read, it was resolved that Mr. Fraser be informed that the Council are unable to deal with the section at present. The Secretary of the Oamaru Stone Company wrote, applying to lease part 2, section 4, block VI., Oamaru District (Quarry Reserve}. Referred to the Reserves Committee, with power to act. A telegram was received from Mr. Shrimski, M.H.R., asking the opinion of the Council re Market Reserve. It waa resolved to telegraph on the subject to the Hon. J. Miller and Mr. S. E. Shrim-
ski. The following resolution, brought up from tho Committee of the whole Council, was read and agreed to : —" That Mr. M'Leod be informed that the Council cannot see its way to permit him to undertake private practice generally, but seeing that he has been requested by the North Waitaki Railway Asrociation to make a preliminary survey of the route of | that railway, the Council will not prevent I his complying with the request, provided always that all the duties appertaining to his office as engineer to the Corporation are efficiently discharged, and that none i of the works at present in hand or required by the Council to be undertaken, planned, or superintended are in any way neglected, and provided further that no additional expense to the Council is involved." It was resolved, "That Mr. M'Leod be directed to reduce the engineering and surrey staff as much as is possible consistently with the efficient carrying out of the Corporation works." Mr. M'Leod was authorised to advertise for and employ a cadet to be articled to the Corporation. The following report from the Gasworks Committee was read andadopted : —'* Your Committee would recommend that the 4-inch main be extended from Dee-Btreet j to Usk-street."
It was resolved, " That Mr. Coop's application be not entertained for the presont.''
" That tne 2-rncii jpipa D® eont:.nvic-a ; along Eden-street to Warren-street. " That a lj-inch pipe be laid down c along Wharf-street from Wansbeck-street j, to Aran-atreet." " That a 1-inch pipe be laid down in c-Itchen-atreet from the present main to the o lamp in Severn-street." I On the motion of Councillor Procter, c seconded by Councillor Familton, it was a resolved, "That a return be laid before c the Council of the expenditure on the 1 j works in Teßt-street, such return to show the resolutions authorising the same." A recommendation by the Engineer for j the appointment of Mr. Tweddle, of the Hydraulic Engineering Company, London, to inspect the pipe plant before being shipped to Oamaru, was agreed to. The accounts were passed as follows : Ordinary account, L 94 19s 8d ; gasworks, Lllß Ss 5d ; waterworks, L 2853 os 6d. Councillor Humphrey gave notice that he would move as next meeting, "That Thames-street be metalled where required, from the Poat Office to Ooquetstreet, and that the Engineer be instructed to prepare specifications and call for tenders for the work; also, that the Engineer prepare plans and specifications, with an estimate of cost, for the drainage of blocks IV. and V."
