The arrival at Oamaru of this afternoon's through train from C'hristehureh was delayed through a slight accident to the engine of the through train which left here for Christchurch this morning. The train from Christchurch could not proceed on its journey until the train that met with the accident .arrived at the point at which the two trains pass each other.
Aii interested are reminded that a m.;.:i- j ing for the purpose of establishing a Congregational Church in Oamaru will be held at ] the old Tees-street Hall this evening, at 7 o'clock. The Rev. Mr. Walker, of Christchurch, has consented to preside. The monthly meeting of the Waitaki County Council will be held at the usual hour to-morrow morning. The quarterly meeting of the Oamaru School Committee will be held at the' Secretary's, Wear-street, on Friday, the 11th inst., at half-past seven o'clock in the evening. We learn with regret that Mr. Thomas Henderson, of Otepopo, received a blow on one of his legs from a horse yesterday, which has lamed him. Although no serious consequences are likely to ensue, seeing that Mr. Henderson was already suffering from an old injury received in a somewhat similar fashion, the second mishap will doubtless prove doubly inconvenient and painful. The usual monthly meeting of Lodge Waitaki. No. 1111, E.G., will be held at halfpast seven o'clock this evening. Mr. Hesketh informs us that the whole of the immigrants ex; Invercargill have been engaged with the exception of two families and three single girls. The following items from a letter of an old Oamaruite now resident at Martin's Bay, on the West Coast of this Provincial District, will possess some interest for our readers : " This place ought to be exempt from the new land law until the Government improves the entrance to the river ; for at the present time intending purchasers or settlers have no guarantee if they take a passage in the " Maori " that they will be landed. The '< ioveniment have established a boat and crew to tender the steamer ; but, if it is rough, she does not wait, but proceeds on her course. The boating service is of no advantage to the place, but saves trouble and risk to the subsidised boat and the owners—the U.S.S. Co. There lias been a sad accident in our neighborhood, by which six lives were lost, amongst whom were two of my most intimate friends Williamson and Yelk I'oor Yell applied to the Education Board for a School Grant and succeeded in getting it ; hut this community is not a harmonious one and a number of people did all they could to prevent the school from being .started, ami when it was started they would not send their children to it, 'Die school has now been in existence twelve months. I u rote to the Board laying the matter freely before them, and received the reply 1 expected, that unless there uas a better attendance at the school the grant would be withdrawn. So that their meaningless opposition will probably deprr ■• u.-Tof a school altogether." The Philharmonic Society will meet '.!: evening at the Waitaki Hall. A meeting of the Waitaki Amateur Athletic Club was held at the Royal Hotel last night Present—Messrs. Ottersou .(.chair), Burnett, Ferens, Lintott, and Walls. After the adoption of the sports programme, published elsewhere, a letter was received from Mr. (.'. S. Allen accepting die office of Vice-President, and enclosing a donation to the funds of the Club. It was decided that the President's Cup be given to the winner of the greatest number of points in the one mile, quarter of a mile,' IDC yard*;, and hurdle races, A report un a place suitable for lawn tennis. &c, was laid before the meeting, and it was io ranged that a Committee should inspect the spot to-day for the purpose of deciding. It is expected that the first meeting will take place on the ground selected on Saturday next. I Last '.veiling'-: evangelistic service was j well attendee. •-!-i Volunteer Hall being I nearly full.
