We regret that our article on the Waimate I <>fh>y biiriiiug business should have had 'an Injurious Effect upon anybody. Such a Afuno- was not intended. We would be ;„ ,tas careful not to injure Mr. Middleton as that gentleman would apparently h *„, >fc to act to the prejudice of bergeant Rutlk-WJE ; and, indeed, would rather cut offour ritfht hand than do Mr. Middleton an ii justice. For this reason, as Mr. Middleto'n and a number of other people residing in the same town with that gentleman, have become possessed of the idea that our remarks were aimed at him, we think that he not be depnved of the privilege M having recourse to an operation in w/hieh he seems to have every confidence as a means of clearing his character. T.W is no accounting for the peculiarities of people ; perhaps it we were to comply with the polite request contained in Mr. Joyst 8 letter, ana announce that we did not refer to Mr. Middleton, nobody would believe us. We are sorry to put Mr. Middle-tost to so much trouble and iwpenae, but our reply to Mr. .Totnt's letter, solely tor i Mr. Middleton's sake, is—proceed.
