At :\ roeeiiv ineeting of the ProseS3ional Board <■! the O --'g ' University, the proposal of thd Synod of the Otago Presbyterian Church to found a chair of moral philosophy and political economy in the University, was con-id-red. It was resolved that thes,' subj- cts w re a'ready sofficienlly taught in the University ; al-o, tliht ms the patronage of th-- pro nosed cliair was in the hands of the ecelesiasriG:!.} body its institution could not fail io give rise to an impression throughout the colony that it was int- nded to subserve sectarian or ecel-siastical purposes, and that, such an imp r ession, even though unfounded, would be highly injurious to the welfare and future prospects of the University. The Board further resolved that in order to enable students to successfully pass the University examinations, ths ohair required was that of physical science and English language and literature. On these- grounds they recommended the Cou -fil to refuse i;s assent t ( . the foniidiof of t-e proposed C ia:r of moral philosophy and political economy, which in t e opinion of the B iard would not merely bo sop rftiious, but. would be prejudicial to the b-st ilVetests of the University. The Don din Artillery Company intend going into camp for a week about the 9th November, and will invite the Christchurch and Invercargill Artillery Companies to accompany them. CHRISTCHURCR. October 3. A man named Lawrence Dennis has iust been arres ed, for burglary at the house of Thomas Patrick, and stealing a cash-box containing Ll3. He was brought up at the Court aud remanded till tomorrow. The criminal calendar contains the following cases : - Larceny, 4 ; forgery ,_ 1 ; rap , X ; murder, 1 ; arson, 3 ; malicious injury to property, 1 ; burglary, 1 ; killing cattle with intent, to steal carcas-, 1. The damage to the line having been repaired, the ordinary trains are running north as usual. The Presbyterian Synod closed its sittings last night.
A meeting of shareholders of the proposed Temperance was held last night. Jt was resolved to advertise for a 3ita, 1800 shares are taken up, but the building will not be begun till 6000 are allotted.BALCLUTHA. October 3. The following is a report of the damage just to hand : —Five houses are broken up and carried down the stream ; all the yardena :re ruined where the flood h=i.s been; aod the railway station and works are m.nch injured It will take about a month to repair them. Many houses in the townshin are shaking, and are likely to go. The Crown Hotel and its immediate vicinity are free from th" effects of the flood. The river has firmed a channel for its If right across Inch Clutba. streets, md the township is much injured. It is impossible to estimate the damage done. Nearly all the inhabitants have left, and are living in the north side of the town.
