Reports are current that in future the Government will secure the services of a leading barrister to appear for the Crown, instead of, as heretofore, offering these positions to junior counsel. It is intended to form, a joint Victorian and Sydney team to meet and play against the Australian Eleven on their return from Europe and America, Senior-Sergeant Walling, of the Dubbo police, has been shot while in the execution of his duty. Newcastle, Sept. 23. The export of coal for the past week was 27,966 tons. Brisbane, Sept. 23. Mr Mills, who resigned the office of Minister of Public "Works, contends that he was dismissed. The Opposition announce their policy to be a three million loan for the construction of railways and the imposition of a property tax. Further reports from the Rev. George Brown state that after the massacre of the Native missionaries, he felt bound to punish the murderers in order to preyent further atrocities ; also to organise the attacking force and accompany it, because Samoan and Fiji teachers had determined to avenge the murder of their feljiow teachers. The expedition killed twenty of the murderers, and destroyed several of their villages. Subsequently Mr Brown made peace with the leading hostile tribes. Melbourne, September 23. A telegram from London says that about half of the barley crops have been damaged by wet weather. The new associated banks are pressing on the Government their willingness to
take on call at four per cent, as much of the proposed loan as the senior banks, but the Company decline to give that interest. The unemployed still continue to organise deputations to the Government. At a meeting, one speaker said a large number of men were in danger of having their household goods sold off through the want of employment. Carpenters and joiners complain of the Government contractors using American sashes and doors instead of the factory made articles. Mr. Berry promised the matter his consideration. The Cabinet, on the question of mail service, has resolved that it should be 36 days' service via Brindisi and 42 via Southampton. Melbourne is to be the terminus and vessels are to call at Adelaide, but South Australia is not to be a party to the contract. It is understood that the Governor has communicated to Ministers that his departure from the Colony will not take place till January. Advices received state that Cook and Stanley, billiard players, will leave London for the Colonies by September. A deputation from Albury has waited on Mr. Berry re the Border duties. Mr. Berry said his Government would not object to an arrangement to abolish not only the Border duty on produce, but all Border duties, provided the Sydney Government would meet them in a reasonable spirit. Betting on the Derby and Cup is very slack. Some disposition has been shown , to back Lockieys. j The weather is very warm. j The appeal in the equity case of Wolfe v. Hart was dismissed with cost 3, Judge Molesworth's decision granting an injunction against Hart for using Wolfe's labels for schnapps being confirmed.
