HARBOR BOARD.
Tb.e adjourned fortnightly meeting of the Board was held at the Harbor Chambers to-day. There were present—Messrs. •Sumnter (Chairman), Steward, Reid. Meek, and Lemon. The minutes of the last general and a ' special meeting were read and confirmed. The subject of havi.ig permanent lines of mils laid down from tin; Breakwater railway to connect tlie new wharf with it was brought forward by the Secretary, : who stated that the Railway Department 1 had consented to work a teynparavy line | on to the wharf with the present steep . ! grade and sharp curve for six months. i but would -positively refuse to do so after the expiration of that time. '•s-line discussion took place upon the suoji-ct, the whole of the members agreeing that the work was one of very great urgency, and that no time shoydtl bp lost. in carrying out the necessary reclamation and ilia alterations on the line. It was resolved, on the motion of Mr. Steward, seconded by Mr. Meek. "'That the Engineer be requested at once to prepare a plan to enable the improvement of the grade and curve at the approach of the Normanby and Macandrew Wharf without, delay, and that the Standing Committee have authority to order the immediate carrying out of any necessary works to meet the object in view." It w-as further resolved, "That notice be forthwith given to the contractors that the Board requires greater expedition to be exhibited in carrying on the works now in hand, and requests them to take every possible means to secure the same, and suggests that the inen should work overtime or in relays." The name of Mr. Headland was added to the Standing Committee, which was instructed to take into consideration the question of facilitating the business of the Board and the general conduct of the landing and shipping departments, the Committee to report from time to time. It waß decided—That the permanent paid staff of the Rocket Brigade should be reduced to four, and that any assistance rendered on emergency should be pafcT for on the occasion arising. Mr. Steward drew attention to the very great danger at present existing of persons falling into the Lagoon at night, owing to the fence having been removed from alongside the railway line at the end of Tyne-street. It was decided to have a fence erected in order to prevent the possibility of acci» dents occurring by persons walking over the bank of the Lagoon.
Accounts to the amount of L 1514 16s lid we're passes, for payment. it was decided to Sand to the widow of the late Duncan Young, formerly nightwatchman at the Breakwater, an amount equal to a month's salary. Mr. JUeraon brought under the notice of the Board the fact that the present nightwatchman (Mr. George M'Kenzie) was actually in receipt of a less salary than he was formerly in receipt of in a different position. He (Mr. M'Kenzie) felt rather sore upon the point. JNo action was taken in the matter, some members 3tai.insj that Mr. M'Kenzie before applyim; for the position knew what the salary of the nifdit-watchrnan was. and that he hail no now to complain that, he had suffered a ivductiun of salary. The Secretary was empowered to obtain improved lighting apparatus for rite lighthouse, and the Hoard rose.
