September 17. Arrived : Ship Pareora, from London, 92 days out. The City of New York has arrived. The news is anticipated by the Claude Hamilton. The Victoria loan of five millions includes L 1.000,000 for the purchase of the Hobson Bay Railway, L 200,000 for Parliamentary dwellings and new law courts, L2oo,ooofor state schools, and L 2,000,000 for new railways. The last general election cost L 9,400, and the census L 12,400. Woodyer, agent for Burton's Australian Circus, and Hayman, Kelly and Lyons' Minstrels, have arrived from Sydney, to make arrangements f'or opening here, f —U—: BALCLOTHA, September 17. The necessary statutory declaration and [i ,don has been filed witli the R.M. i.'.nirt here, praying for an enquiry into i me election for the East Ward; Balclutha, on Thursday last, and pvaymg that phe I same may be declared void, upon the j ground that Messrs .Runne and Campbell, l two of the apparently successful candidates, did not poll the number of votes the returning officer declared that they did, and that the votes polled for the other candidates were counted as having been polled for Messrs Dunne and Campbell. This petition only refers to the East Ward ; but another will be fd ecl ? praying that the whole election may be declared void, in consequence of numerous irregularities. CHRISTCHURCH. September 17. A billiard tournament is now taking place, in which the best known local billiard players are engaged. At a sitting of the City Council last evening, a letter was read from Councillor ■ Rt'dcliffe, wishing to withdraw his resignation. He was told by the Mayor • this was impossible. A young girl named Doran, aged 18, i the daughter of a respectable storekeeper, ; has been missing since Saturday.
