WELLINGTON. September 13. Colonel Whitmore continues unwell, and was not present during the afternoon. Mr. Wilson represents the Government in the Chamber during the absence of the Colonial Secretary. * CHRISTCHURCH. September 13. The argument in the case of the Avon Road Board v. the Colonial Treasurer was concluded to-day. The Court gave judgment for the Government, both judges concurring that a mandamus could not issue. Mr. Joynt gave notice of appeal. September 14. There is to be telephonic communication between the pilot station, Lyttelton, and the look-out house. The Union Steamship Company have lowered their fares between Lyttelton and Port Chalmers. * AUCKLAND. September 13. At a meeting of Volunteers, it was resolved to support the proposal for a National Rifle Association. Robert Eccles, a passenger by the Lady Jocelyn, was fined L 25, and his property was forfeited, for smuggling 18 watches and thirty razors ashore. GISBORNE. September 14. In the case of the Waiapu murder, at half-past 12 last night the jury brought in the following verdict: That the said Hiria "Whakaaru, on the 28th August, on a terrace above the Waiatauto Creek, near to Awanui, (was found dead, there appearing marks of violence on and inside her body, the said marks being, in the opinion of the jurors, inflicted by Heuare Rete and Reneamene, which caused her to die. They also made this presentiment :—That the action taken by the Committee (Native) at Waiomataiua relative to the investigation of the cause of the death of the deceased is worthy of the highest commendation and praise. The evidence taken before the said Committee, and re-taken at this enquiry, has very much assisted the jurors in arriving at the verdict. ih;Hon should be made to the Government that action may at once be taken to prevent the wholesale traffic in spirituous liquors by unlicensed persons so close together in outlying districts, such as where the offence was committed. ♦ WESTPORT. September 14. A largely attended meeting was held here to further the extension of the East and West Coast Railway scheme to Westport as the best and only port always open on this coast. A branch extension line is proposed en route from Reefton to Westport. A smart shock of earthquake was experienced here this morning at about 4.40. Direction apparently north-east. The houses were shaken and the clocks stopped by the shock. KAIKOURA. September 14. A smart shock of earthquake was felt here at 4.45 this morning. NELSON. September 14. A slight shock of earthquake was felt here this morning.
