CHRISTCHURCH. September 12,
The polling for the return of three city councillors took place to-day. The excitement intown was immense. Up to five o'clock 8100 ratepayers had polled. The polling resulted in the return of the two ex-Mayors, Messrs. Gapes and Wilson, and Aaron Ayers. Tho number of nominations for passages from the United Kingdom made at the Christchurch office during the month was 112 souls.
The annual meeting of the Canterbury Rowing Clnb took place last night. The Club commences this season with 173 members. In the case of the Land Fund and the Government, .partly argued to-day, before Justices Johnston and Williams, Mr. Harper and Mr. Joynt appeared for the Avon Road Board, and the AttorneyGeneral and Mr. Duncan for the Government. The argument was not concluded when the Court rose. It will be resumed this evening.

..ie election of Mr: Wilson. There is some talk of their resigning in a body. In reference to Mr. NVilson's election it is known th:it there was a lavish expenditure of money, tt was throughout the noisiest and rowdiest ever held in Christchurch. The closing scene, when the poll was declared at nine o'clock last night, was an utter disgrace to Christchurch. Two of the Councillors have just sent in their resignations, -, $ NEW PLYMOUTH. September 12. The survey of the railway between Stratford and Normanby has been started. NAPIER. September 12. A good deal of interest was taken in the Municipal election to-day. All the ladies on the roll polled. This was the first time any of these have exercised the privilege of electors. The Synod of Waiapu closed their session last night.

At the meetjng of the Waste Lands Board to-day, Mr. Raymond applied to purchase 300 acres in Rangaturu district. Granted. Mr. Mabin applied to purchase 575 aens at Hokonui. Granted. Mr. Johnston applied for a lease of 3680 acres at Wairoa. He explained that his preemptive v.'as included in the application. The Board directed that he should select his ijre-emptive right, and that the balance oj: the area should be declared open for applications at L2 per acre. «. TIMARU. September 12. The result of the election of five Councillors for the Borough of Timaru was declared by the Returning Officer, as follows, viz. Jackson, J. Gibson, H. Green, G. Jones, and F. J. Wilson. The elections caused no excitement, and the result was' declared before only about twenty persons.
