It is stated that Professor Pearson is to form one of the trio with Berry and O'Loghlen, as Reform Bill delegates to England. The Chairman of the Eastern Extension Cable Company, in announcing the determination of the Directors, sent the following telegram to Colonel Glover : " The Company have no power to allow Press combination. The Board's resolution of 20th August must therefore be strictly carried out. The responsibility of breaking off negotiations must rest with the Press, who will be the sufferers. They do not seem to appreciate the sacrifice which Eastern Company makes to assist extension. Make your arrangements to leave Melbourne, as further concessions are impossible. Intimate this as final decision."
The sheep sales last week realised L 25,000, the sales from one farm alone amounted to over L 11,00.0. The weather has been very close for the time of year.
The Land Tax Commission is now sitting. Nearly 140 appeals are to be dealt with.
The betting on the Melbourne Cup has been very dull lately, owing to the absence of the Ring in Sydney. Auckland has been backed for a large amount.
