CHRISTCHURCH. September 10. The head waiter "of the Christchureh Club was this morning fined L 5 for assaulting the steward with the dinner bell. Mddle. Averrau, an equestrienne connected with Hay and Benhamo's circus, died this morning of lock-jaw. A few days ago, while going through one of her acts, she fell from the horse and broke her arm. Tetanus supervened, and the unfortunate woman expired in great agony shortly after midnight. There is great sympathy with her husband. A meeting of civic candidates is fixed for to-morrow evening. There is a large r. Id. The polling takes place on Thursday. The Poultry Association forwards LIOO Home for the importation of fancy birds. AUCKLAND. September 10. The Halcione has arrived with the second batch of Kati Kati settlers, after an uneventful passage of 102 days. The Catholic petition in favor of denominational education has received 740 signatures of persons over fourteen years old. » WELLINGTON. September 10. The Agent-General telegraphs, under date London, September 7th, that the Hermione has sailed, with 93 immigrants for Taranaki and 215 for We'lington. Mr. H. G. Masters, upwards of 20 years in the Crown Lands Office, died suddenly this morning.

TIMARU. XI. Mr. Beetham, the newly-appointed R. M. for Timaru, took his seat to-day on the Magisterial Bench. A further Court inquiry is being now heard before him, B. Woollcombe, and T. W. Hall, as nautical assessors, touching the wreck of the barque Melrose on Sunday week last, and is likely to continue all day.
