The appointment to the post of Mr. Grace, who is said to have no experience whatever, has also given much dissatisfacrion. A petition has been drawn up for presentation to the Hon. the Minister for Justice, praying that Major Mair may not be dismissed. TIMARU. September 1. The football match yesterday, between Christchureh and Timaru was won by the latter by one goal and one try to nothing. A fire occurred at Otaio last night, resulting in the destruction of the stables and outbuildings connected with Hoskins' Hotel. September 2. The ketch Palmerston is still weathering it out, but drifted during the night. This afternoon a public meeting will be held to take steps towards getting subscriptions for the shipwrecked sailors. A popular entertainment will be held to-night at the Mechanics' Institute, the proceeds to. be devoted to the fund for the sailors, some of whom assist in the entertainment. One body has ju3t been washed rp on the beach.
