The Loan and Mercantile Agency's Circular (per the San Francisco mail) reports : WOOL Since the conclusion of the public sale there has been some inquiry privately for fine combing merino, but no extensive transactions are reported. The known scarcity of thi- clas3 of wool, and the heavy falling off generally in Australian shipments recently had some considerable effect upou manufacturers, who hitherto h;>d l*een unwilling to believe in the .-tati-tica. of short supplies furnished from various centres of Colonial r reduction. The Biadfo'd market shows symptoms of some weakness, owing probably to the large purchase of cross-bred and long-wool made during the sale*, and t<> the unus-ually large stock < f Homegrown wool, which estimated as equal to two year-' crop; but in other quarters we do not hear of alteration, though the manufacturing districts in the north report quiet demand. In preserved meats the demand is -slack, both for mutton and beef; th re is no bu-mess of importance recorded, .-ma I sales of mutton have been effected at *Jd. but this cannot be considered a firm price. To teil a-.y considerable quantity a reduction « otild have t» be submitted to. Australian whe it 13 selling »t 51s per 469lt>s landed.
