CANTERBURY CORN EXCHANGE REPORT. The following 13 the report for the week ending Friday evening last: — Wheat—There is little or no alteration to note in. price, the tone of the market is however firmer, holders being more confident of better prices ruling. Buyers are open to give 4b for Rood milling samples ; we quote Is to 4s Id for good milling samples feed wheat. The season for sowing is now far advanced, purple straw being the only one inquired for, for this last we quote 43 4d to 4a 9d, according to quality. Barley A strong demand still exists for tbia, both for malting and seed purposes; very little is offering, and what there is of an inferior quality, any average parcels coming forward would command full rates. First-class samples are hardly obtainable at any price. We quote first class samples at from 5s 6d to 5c 9d ; medium, 4s 6d to ss. Oats—There ia still a strong demand, but the high rates ruling prevent much business being done. Milling oats are from 43 Id to 4a 2Jd ; feed, 3s lOd to 4s Id ; seed oats, 4s 4d to 4s sd, according to quality. Grass Seed—For first class samples there is still a strong demand, but there are few of this description cetning forward. Holders of top samples are asking as high as 7s 6d. We quote first clas3 at from 7s to 7s 6d; medium to average, os 6d to 6* 6d ; cocksfoot is still inquired for, and 7d to 7sd niiy be quoted as its value. Potatoes —For this article there is still a food demand, and high prices are ruling otb for seed purposes and consumption. We quote L 4 10s to Lo. Cheese and Butter—The price of cheese has »lightly improved. We quote £;Jd to 6d par lb. Butter, according to quality, 7d to XOd per lb. ENGLISH COMMKRCIAL. Wklltnoton', August 26. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company have received the following telegram, under date London, 21st inst. : The wool safes opened on the 20th inst., at the level of Inst aides, and comprise 350,000 boles, 177,0' oof which have teen sent to the manufacturing districts direct. The market is firmer for washed combing wools. Competition by both Home and foreign buyers is active. Trade in manufacturing districts is slightly better. The tallow market is fl*t; best mutton is SSs Gd ; beef, 36s 6*d. The wheat market i 3 quiet. The quality of crop* here is good. The leather market is quiet; beat side 3 bring 9jd.
