A RAILWAY ACROSS THE ISLAND.

Ahaica, August 10. A large and influential public meeting wiw held last night v. the railway between the East ami West Coasts of this ialand. Tint meeting was unanimous as to the advisability »f proceeding with it. The route rut tlolcitika, the Haaat Pass, mid Otaio was strongly commended, and i Grey Valley line corinecing with Amberley advocated. The representative of the district was requested to support the Grey Valley and Canterbury mute. It wiw also resolved, " That considering the immense traffic to Reefton, this meeting would urge upon Parlianv. Nt the pressing | necessity existing for eontirnung the line i from Brunuerton to Reefton, and that | the work be commenced wit It as little delay as possible, seeing it would eventually become a portion of the twain line between the East and West Coasts of the Taland." The following resolution was carried with acclamation : —" That the want of a good mainroid from the Ahaura to the Count's Station, Canterbury, has been long felt, and the absence of such ha* proved highly injurious to the producers of the Grey Valley, and that with iiview to enconmge settlement it is desirable a sum of money be placed by Parliament upon the Supplementary Estimates fur the immediate prosecution of this much-needed work.'' A very strong Committee was appointed, with Mr. R. Alcorn m Chairman, and Mr. Drury a3 Secretary. It wa« incidentally mentioned that the Committee would gladly co-operate with liny other county favoring the same route. The Committee" is to meet fortnightly, Mid evidently means business.
