As will lie seen by an advertisement in another column, the brewers, in order to meet the new fluty on be-'r, have raised the price of that article by twopence a gallon. Why a rise of twopence should have been determined upon, seeing that the tax is only three halfpence, while the brewers also enjoy a reduction on the duty of sugar by onehalf, is rather difficult to understand. This rise of twopence per gallon means an advance of 9s. on the hogshead, while the new ta>: only amounts to 6s. 9d., from which must be deducted sixpence saving in consequence of the reduction on the duty upon sugar. .So that according to present arrangements the brewers will benefit by the new order of things to the extent of 2s. 9d. per hogshead. A meeting of persons willing to join a town and volunteer brass band will be held in the Volunteer Hall this evening, at halfpast 7 o'clock.
