FIRE ON THE RACECOURSE.

Three stacks of hay on the racecourse belonging to the lessees, Messrs. Paterson and Shalders, were destroyed by lire shortly after three o'clock this morning. The lire was first noticed by Mr. Shalders or one of his sons, but nothing could be done to save any of the stacks, the three of them being close together. It is supposed that some tramp had sought shelter for the night in the hay, and had accidentally set lire to them by some sparks from his pipe ; but though the course was ridden over no trace of any person could be found. The value of the stacks amounted to about L 250. They were insured for about L 213 in the National Company, half of which sum is re-in-sured in the Standard Company.
