WELLINGTON. August 7. The brewers met to-day, and resolved, in of the taiofi, to raise the price of beer from Js. Cd. to Is. Bd. per gallon. The publicans have galled a meeting to consider this increase. Several small vessels were driven ashore, without loss of life, during last week's gale.
GfIRISTCHUECH, ' '• ; August 7. Early this morning a Customs officer, accompanied by a constable, visited each brewery in Christchurch and the suburbs, to take stock in connection with the new duty on beer, and caused great consternation among brewers, who did not see the report of the Treasurer's speech till some hours later. Conflicting" opinions are expressed as to alterations in the Customs tariff. AUCKLAND. The Financial Statement is well received here except bv the brewers. + TIMARU. Aug. 8. At a meeting of the Harbor Board to-day, a letter from the Government was read, stating that they could not recommend the endowment of 50,000 acres for Titnaru Harbor. A resolution was passed urging the members for South Canterbury to use their influence to obtain the endowment.
