THE REV. FATHER HENNEBERRY AT TIMARU.
I (per press agency.) I Timaru, August 4. Father Henneberry opened his mission at the Roman Catholic Church here-to-day. There was a crowded congregation. At the commencement of his address he referred to himself and what he had been reported to have said to the effect that marriages between Catholics and nonCatholics were no marriages at all, not even if the parties were married by a priest. He emphatically denied that he had said so, and urged that if he had the priests would not sanction his preaching in their churches, and the bishop would suspend him. He had no doubt a conspiracy was at work to frustrate the good of his mission. If, in future, his hearers read such reports in the papers, sent through the means of the press telegrams throughout New Zealand they were not to believe them. He likened newspaper men and editors to curs, and treated them as such. He never saw such a Press as in New Zealand. Regarding the writ against him for libel, he said there was not tiie shadow of a case. All the witnesses in the world and picked juries cannot make a lie of the truth It had been said that he made money by his missions, and that he took LI3OO from Reef ton. He was aorry it was not true. He was in debt. He stood before them in debt. His mission lasts one week, and there will be services in the church twice a day.
