It will be remembered that on Friday last we published a involution passed by the Municipal Council protesting against the railway department laying down a siding on the Esplanade, and threatening to oppose the proposal by every means in their powtir, A, »G.m.ewhat different completion was pnt upon the matter at the meeting of the Council last evening, when the following letter was read : Resident Engineer's Office, Christchurch, July 29, 1873. W. J. Steward, E?q., Mayor, Oamaru. Sjk.—ln reply to 3'our telegram of the. "2fith iust., I have the honor to. acknowledge its; ami in reply t>. inform you that the Council's objection in connection with the siding on the Esplanade has been forwarded to tho Minister, pending whose reply the work will be suspended. Turntables have been ordered from America for the permanent arrangements, but in the meantime no temporary provision can be made other than that proposed, but to which, the Council objects. If this is net carried nut, the through trains to Dunedin cannot run until the turntables, ordered from America, have been received and erected.—l have. &c., J. Henry Lowe, Resident Engineer. Some liitle discussion took place upon the subject, Councillors expressing their willingness to withdnw all opposition to the proposal on the distinct understanding that the siding was merely to be a tem-

porary one, to get over a present difficulty. ft was resolved on the motion of Cr. Headland, seconded by Cr. Gibbs "That the Government be informed that this Council having received certain information from Mr. Lowe, Resident Engineer, -»v proposed siding on to the Esplanade, are willing to withdraw their objection against the same, on condition that the Government make all necessary Erections for the protection of the lessees cattle, and also recompense him for his "li.as >f the nse of the ground for the remainder of his lease, and further undertake to lift the rails without delay after the arrival of the turn-tables from America, and to restore the ground to, as nearly as possible, its original state."
