We are informed that the widow and children of Joseph Millin, who died suddenly on Monday afternoon, have been Jeft almost entirely destitute. Seeing that there are three or four small children, only one of the family being able to do anything to assist the widow in earning a livelihood, this is a case in which public charity may very fairly be bestowed, and we trust some of our philanthropic residents will take the matter in hand.

Mr. Sumpter, as Secretary to the Railway Committee, having communicated with the Public Works Department with reference to the survey of the proposed railway extension to Livingstone, has received the following reply : "Dunedin, July 30th. —George Sumpter, Esq., Oamaru.—Copy Engineer's report on preliminary survey branch line will be posted to-morrow." Xo ca3es of any kind were set down for hearing at the Resident Magistrate's Court to-day. The efforts put forth by the fellow employes of the late railway guard, James Baird, and nobly seconded by Messrs. Back, Loring, and other gentlemen at the head 01. affairs, to obtain subscriptions in aid of the widow and children, have been successful beyond the most sanguine anticipations of the promoters. We learn that L 420 have been received, while fully L3O more have to come in.
