We are indebted to the enterprise of Mr. Richardson, of the Royal Hotel, for the promise of a treat such as has never before been offered to the public of Oamaru. A billiard match between Messrs. Roberts (the premier billiard player of the world) and Shorter, a foeman worthy of the champion's steel, will possess something more than the virtue of novelty. Everybody must have read the glowing accounts of the exciting contests engaged in by these celebrated players ; and we can easily imagine that amateur billiardists and other admirers of the noble game will only be too glad to meet these two billiard heroes face to face. We may already have witnessed the wonderful celerity of Roberts —the cleanness of his strokes, and keenness of his foresight; but what are all these if thrown away upon an opponent who is a much inferior player. The fame of Shorter has resounded throughout the world, as having made the largest break on record. This was not Fcored by a fluke; for he is known to be a all round player, and one whose ability is such a3 to invariably secure to him surprisingly high scores. In fact, he is the man whose playing so delighted the clever Roberts, that he selected him to play what are termed exhibition marches throughout the world in conjunction with him. They have played to very full houses throughout Australia, and now they are coming to Oamaru, at the instigation of Mr. Kichardson, to make their first appearance in New Zealand, on to-morrow and Thursday nights. In order that all may have an opportunity of witnessing the play, a sta«e i.s being erected in the billiard-room of the Royal. As these are holiday times, a crowded attendance may be expected. A Special Meeting of the Harbor Board is called for Friday next, at the usual time. Mr. Archibald Forbes, the renowned army correspondent of the Daily News, is son of the late Rev. Mr. Forbes, minister of the parish of Sleat, Skyn—formerly parish schoolmaster of Jwt Augustus. The late Mr. Forbes was an excellent scholar, and published the longest, and, perhaps, the best Gaelic grammar in existence.
