The Evening Mail. FRIDAY, JULY 19, 1878.
Due vi>te procured by an act of bribery would have the effect of "nullifying the election of the candidate in whode interest the deed was clone, provided he was placed at the top of the poll. An act of bribery i> purchaairig support by holding out a pecuniary or other inducement, or by intimidation. We regret the necessity for reminding one of the canvassers in Mr. Steward"-* interest that he was, perhaps, doing the candidate of his choice a most unfriendly turn when he, this morning, withdrew a pound from his pocket and offered it to a ratepayer as the price of his vote. We draw attention to this circumstance, not from parti.-an.-hip, but in the interests of morality ; and we assure that in doing so we shall have the sympathy of both sides. If necessary, we have authority for publishing the nara-i ot our informant and the gentleman who set m> high a value ujon one of the privileges of a Britisher aud a ratepayer. It may be as well to explain that we were careful to enquire as to the sincerity of the canvasser ; and oar informant states that there is not the lea*t doubt about it. If it v.-ere intend d aj chart", the joker went to far, and tlie arrair had so much the appearance of seriousness that our informant lias been misled : for he is certainly of opinion that the money would have been his hail he ehospn to comply with the stipulation sought to be impend. We shall b«3 glad to place our columns ai the disposal of those concerned, in order, if possible, to elicit the truth of this matter. During the meeting of the Municipal Council last evening, the Mayor stated that during the day an inquiry .hatl been made ato the precise date on which tlv. proceeds of the loan would be received. '1 he Chairman of the Finance Committee, who was present, had requested the manager of the National Bank to statu when the money might be expected. Mr. Kfcrf had replied that the money would be received Dy the mail, which was due on the ,'>: h August. The fortnightly meeting of the Harbor Boant, which" should have been hel.l this morning, did not eventuate, as satiieieii: members were not present to form a.yi- n-.tn. Messrs. Snnipter, fdirimski, and Lemon, were the ou!y members who put in an appearance.
