The O.imaru Christy Minstrel entertainment is fixed for to-night at the Masonic Hall. When are taken into consideration the charitable object for which the entertainment is to be given, and the beauty of Minstrelsy, we cannot wonder that already upwards of L3O worth of tickets have passed iuto the hands of intending auditors. A glance at the programme elsewhere in this issue will, most assuredly, have the effect of convincing the public that it has not been thrown together for the sole purpose of assisting the funds of a deserving charitable institution, but has been arranged with oaro, with the object of also securing far the new and excellent Musioal Association that will appear to-night the reputation which it so tidily deserves. Mr. Francis Train is announced in another column to preach in the Oddfellows' Hall. Coquet street, to-morrow evouing, at halfpast 7 o'clock. This gentleman, who is an Evangelist, has just arrived from the old country, An effort is being made to have Thursday, the 25th instant, proclaimed a public holiday, that being the day ou which the Oamarn Steeplechase Club's race meeting takes place. A requisition is in course of signature to his Worship the Mayor, a.-king him to have the day observed as a holiday. Already a very large number of signatures have been obtained, and we have little doubt that the promoters-will be successful. It is also probable that special arrangements will be made by the railway authorities for the conveyance of visitors from other township*. It is hoped that return tickets will be issued at single fares at ail stations between Timaru and Oamaru, and on tin; South and branch line; avaihib'e for return ou the day after the steeplechases. Should a fair proportion of the horses entered come to the pr.se, ,-, yerj* eicelleiit day's sport may be looked for, the only thing required to make the meeting a success being fine weather. The hearing of a few civil cases comprised the whole of the business down for hearing at the Resident Magistrate's Court to-day. His Excellency ttie Governor has appointed Thursday, the Ist August, as the day on which fresh nominations of candidates for the scat on the Kakauui Koad Hoard, for the LaiiiljourneSiib.-divj-i.-ii>, must be made. An udvertisfiiiens appears in another column to the effect that Mr. i{. I'onle will ply a coach daily between Palmerstou and Waikouaiti. A meeting of the Early Closing Association was held last evening at Gordon's rooms. The Secretary (Mr. Parker) having mooted the question of forming a Mutual Improvement Society in connection with the Association, Messrs. M'ljiina'd and Parker were deputed to make inquiries as to the obtaining of a suitable room, the rent payable for one. .Ve.. and-to\ report in a fort night. Mr. M'Tionald was appointed a Vice-president. It was decidr-d u> get up a concert in aid of tin- funds of the Association. and Messrs. M'Hona'd, Rutgers, and Wo'ch. were appointed a Committee with 'hat view, to report in a fortnight. The Treasurer was instructed to call upon those members i'i arrears for their subscriptions, and bring up at next meeting a list showing the names of all members who have fully paid up, ami aiso of those' in arrears. Mr. P. Gray was elected a member of the Association, and the usual vote of thanks having been passed to the Chairman, the meeting closed.
