Shackleton, .Sim, Corbett, Bridge. The following have passed the senior examination : Gillies, J. M'Farlane. Fleming, Wither, Ashcroft, Lulleivok, Duthio, Fairhrnok, Buchanan, Ualliwell, Sutcliife, Moorliouse, and Purchas. The Gazette to-night notifies that black swans throughout the Colony, and hares within the Auckland Provincial District, are not to be deemed game. July 12. The Hinomoa leaves this afternoon, about 2.30, for Dunedin direct, with the Bons. At a lneei.imc of the lload Board Conference to-day, Mr. Joyntgave bis opinion regarding the non-payment of the balance of the land fund, and the Conference unanimously resolved —"That this Conference having heard the opinion of counsel on the subject of the recovery of the balance of the land fund, due to iilst December last, i.s .of opinion that the lit cessary proceedings should be taken with the least possible delay. This Conference therefore requests Mr. Joynt to take the necessary steps accordingly." Several letters were read from outlying Pond Boards, promising co-operation in the proceedings against the Government. At the inquest an the bod}' i.f Mrs. HofF. the evidence showed that Hofi's wife and a man named Barrett had lived in the same house, which only contained one room, and belonged to Barrett. Hoff is a liistv, drunken fellow, and constantly used violent language to deceased, who was a hard-working woman, and took his abuse very quietly. Huff was very jealous of deceased, but Barrett asserted that he never knew tho latter give any cause for it. Barrett- provided all the food for the house, and Hoff paid nothing for himself and wife living there. Hoff, when arrested, admitted having killed deceased. He said that he was cutting scraps in the garden, and walked inside when he whb bungiy to get some tea and bread, but his wife eould not give it him. He then took a tomahawk, and walked to the table, and cut some tobacco with the tomahawk. He was grumbling that she would not give him his breakfast. Deceased walked inside, and took up a piece of iron, and wanted to strike him. He turned back and took the tomahawk, and gave her a clout on the head, Afterwards he said he walked to the fire, took a light, and put it in the bed, and then cleared out. The jury returned a verdict of wilful murder. A man named Timothy Holohnn 1 as been arrested for priminal assault on a girl nine years of age,

NAPIER. July 11. Proceedings have been commenced today, in the Supreme Court, against the proprietors of the Hawke's Bay Herald, for libel. The plaintiff is Mr. Hugh M'Lean, and the cause of action is for inserting a letter reflcting upon him in his capacity of sheep farmer. It is said that the Herald proprietors have lost the letter, and are unaware who is the author. Mr. M'Lean says he will be satisfied if the name of the party be given up to him, but this, for the reason just stated, is impossible. AUCKLAND. July 11. A warrant was issued to-day for the arrest of A. G. Howard, charged with a violent assault on Mr. Woulfield, Inspector of Siangliter-hous-'S. The latter alleges that Howard drove last night in a cab to the Thistle Hotel, walked in to where Woolrieid was standing in the bar, and struck him two violent blows with a riding whip, one of which laid his hat open, and the other made a cut over one of his eyes. He alleges that Howard then walked out.
