CHRISTCHURCH. "•-■■/ July 8. The Government have informed the Road Boards Conference Committee by telegram that accounts showing deductions made from the land revenue have been prepared, and will be issued shortly. In the meantime, the Conference is to have a legal opinion from Mr. Joynt on the matter on Thursday, and circulars have .been, issued to all County Councils and Road Boards in Canterbury, requesting their co-operation in resisting the action of the Government. At the Magistrate's Court to-day, several merchants were summoned for keeping kerosene for sale without marking the same "dangerous." All the cases were dismissed with a caution. July 9. The fanners here aro taking active measures to cope with the sparrow nuisance. Meetings have been held in the various country districts to devise means to kill the birds. Poisoned wheat is most generally adopted. The Charitable Aid Board, having arranged satisfactorily with the Government, have now settled down to active work.
