• July 6. The National Bank has received advices of the floating of the waterworks loan of L 25,000, which has been placed to the credit of the city. Arrangements have been made between the Government and the Corporation by which the Government agree to sell the Thorndon reclamation to the city upon payment of L 89,000. This sum is to- bo in payment in full of all charges. The Government, morever, promises to introduce a Bill into Parliament to enable the Corporation to carry out the purchase. The extent of the street frontage on the reclaimed land is 7,620 feet. Capt. Holm wood, of the Hyderabad, and the members of the Underwriters' Association, conferred to-day as to the advisability of attempting to get the ship off; and it was decided to make an effort which it is thought may be successful, provided no unfavorable change in the weather takes place. July 7. During the two hours for which the Colonial Museum was open to-day, 650 people attended, and when the time for closing arrived, the place was full, and numbers continued to present themselves. July 8. "William O'Connor, found guilty of attempting to poison William Light, was brought up for sentence at the Supreme Court this morning. The prisoner made a long statement, lasting about an hour and a half, with a view of showing that he could not have been guilty. He called witnesses to testify to his good character, including Superintendent Shearman. Prisoner several times called upon heaven to witness that he was innocent of the crime he had been found guilty of. The Chief Justice, after a few brief remarks, sentenced O'Connor to ten years' penal servitude. The Supplement to the Gazette, just published, contains Mr. Burns' resignation of his seat in the House of Representatives for Roslyn. ♦
