We regret to learn that John Baird, guard of the Ngapara train, who was so severely injured by the engine when uncoupling a truck at Elderslie on Monday, died at 6 p.m. yesterday in U'-* Hospital. The circumstances under which his wife and family of four young children are left ar& truly distressing, Mrs. Baird being unfortunately an invalid, and was, we- bedeve, to lie admitted to the Hospital on the day of her husband's accident; to add to this, the poor woman is totally unprovided with means, and from the fact that Bairrl was unconnected with any friendlv or benefit society, the case i 3 one calling tor the asaist ance of the charitably disposed. We are glad to leam that a meeting or railway employed has be-.-n held, and a committee appointed to collect subscriptions for their relief, and if possible providn a fund that will assi3t.J3ie widow in the future support of herself "aid family. We understand that the funeral of the deceased will leave the Hospital to-morrow at half-past 2 o'clock. An inqusofc will be held at 10 a.m. tomorrow. As suJV-: ?nt members of the North Otago Hortict:;; ;':>.! Society did not put in an appearance '.ast evening to form a quorum, the annual meeting was adjourned until this evening. We would remind those interested that Professor Stanich, the Palestinian Auri~ . will arrive in Oamaru to-morrow, remainin . one day only. He may be consulted at th'» Star and Garter Hotel.
