NORTH OTAGO BENEVOLENT SOCIETY.

The monthly meeting of the Committee of the North Otago Benevolent Society was hold, last evening, when there were present —Messrs. Steward (in the chair), Allen, Falconer, Greenfield, and Milligan. A. letter, from the Minister for .Immigration was read, referring to the arrangement made between the Government and the Society as to the rationing of immigrants at Is. (id. per day, and intimating that this arrangement could not be continued, as the rate in Chrisichurc.lt was '(iid. : Wellington, 'S.yd. ; and Dun-cdin/ft-id. It was resolved to reply, pointing out that, as would be seen by reference to a letter from. Mr. Church. See rotary to the Society, dated 14th September, 1877, the rates agreed to between the department and the Society included Tiring, lights, vegetables, butter, milk", medical comforts, and other articles coming under the head of sundries in the sample tender forms sent, and that the rates quoted for Christchurch, Dimedin, and Wellington do not include these articles; further stating that, for the items under the head of '' rations," exclusive of the sundries referred to, the lowest tender obtainable here is Ski.

The Treasurer was directed to take the necessary steps to recover from Mr. David Hunter Mervyn the sum of LIG, expenditure incurred in forwarding his sisti'i- to the Teviot.

The Visiting Committee's report for the month was read. It was decided that the Society should assist, the friends of Mr. M'Lcod. in providing for him a passage Home. The Barrack Master's report wns read, stating among other things that during the month thirteen domestic servants had been admitted to the Servants' Home, and that all of them had readily found employment. The Chairman, President, and Mr. Hislop were appointed a Sub-Committee to draft a Bill having for its object the incorporation of the Society and vesting its endowments ; the Sub-Committee to report to a special meeting. The Secretary having been authorised to obtain a box for the. safe heephit; of the Society's papers, and accounts to the amount of L4B 4s. having been passed for payment, the Committee adjourned.
