TAPAN UL May 18. Snow continues to fall heavily, accompanied with slight frost. The coaches have stopped running, and communication is suspended:
KAIKOURA. May 18. The polling for the Cheviot election is as follows :—For Saunders—At Kaikoura 59, Waiau 40, Cheviot 2, Glenmark 10 ; for Inglis—At Kaikoura 43, Waiau 5, Cheviot 5, Glenmark 10.
CHRISTCHURCH. May 10. The walking match Bowley reruns Pentecost, 50 miles, for LSO a side, took place in the' Oddfellow's Hall yesterday. Pentecost received a start of half an hour, in which he covered nearly three miles. Bowley, walking splendidly, caught Pentecost just before finishing the 38th mile. Bowley covered 40 miles in 7 hours 55 minutes. Pentecost, who was several laps behind, retired at the 40th mile, completely knocked up.
LAWRENCE. May 18. Throughout the whole week, tho weather has been unusually severe and boisterous. There was another heavy snow storm last evening, covering the ground to a depth of several inches. There is no present prospect of clearing up. Great interest is still manifested in testing the cement at Wetherstone's Gully. Brown and Gascoyne purpose erecting ten head of battery. A Dunedin firm has the contract, and are to have it finished in three months.
DUNEDIN. May 19. Owing to the. telegraph linos working so badly yesterday, messages lodged_ yesterday about noon did not reach their destination here until past 2 and 3 o'clock this morning. All the work had to come round by Westland. At a meeting of the Committee of the Dunedin Jockey Club, the derision of the Auckland Club, in disqualifying Owen Curran and M'Gee from running any horses for a period of two years ; and M'Gce, jockey, from riding for a period of twelve months, together with the disqualification of the horse Falcon for ever, were confirmed.
In accordance with Dr. Somerville's suggestion, an attempt will be mado on Monday to establish a, Ladies' Association in Dunedin for charitable purposes. A sham attack on Dunedin took place last night, und for half an hour a brisk discharge of rifles and cannon was kept up from various points along the_ foreshore of the city and from boati in the bay, ISSm^B
