May 17. About 400 persons attended the Crown land sale yesterday. The bidding was very spirited, particularly with regard to the deferred payments sections in the . Waihemo and Highlay districts. One lot, section 4, block 7, realised Ll7 an acre, the average right through bein< about Lll. A good deal of the rural land was purchased by Mr. A. A. Bell, some by Mr. W. Hepburn, of Dunedin, and John Muir, at prices ranging from LI to L2. The coal mines' lease, Shag Point, was put up at L2O per annum rental for 65 acres, ancl the bonus, which commenced i at L 5, was quickly run up to L 570, the ; purchaser being Mr. G. W. Eliott, of Dunedin.
