WELLINGTON. May 7. Subsequent mail arrangements have resulted in the Tarannki being despatched from Onehunga this afternoon, with the Southern mails.
Five acres of land on the western slope of Mount Victoria, being the outer edge of the To Aro suburbs, and adjoining the Town Belt, was cut up into 33 feet sections, and sold by auction. It realised on an average about L 4 17s per foot. Some of it fetched over L 8 per foot. Seven years ago any of these acres oonld have been purchased for Lot), and four or five years ago they were not considered worth more than LI 00 per acre. The total result of the sale was LBls(> los, and the frontages amounted to 1084 feet.
DUNEDJLN. May 7._ The persons who were employed in distributing and collecting the census papers, have not yet received payment for their services, which were rendered just two months ago. It was intended to have held a meeting of those interested, to take some action, but the facts having been represented to the Minister for Immioratinn, that (,'ontleman has telegraphed back that immediately proper vouchers are forthcoming from the chief enumerator's diice. the accounts due to those employed under him will be paid.
WAXGANUT. May 7. Becent explorations by the Harbor Board officials have discovered a reef of stone suitable for harbor works on Government land abutting on the river about ten miles from town. The quantity is amply sufficient for all works contemplated. This discovery obviates any necessity for dealing with the natives, who were disposed to throw obstacles in the way of the Board, by demanding heavy compensation. Th" Hon. John Balance will address his constituents on .Monday, the 13th.
AUCKLAND. May 7. Judge Hoale has been .--"lit to tin; Native Lands Court at Maketu. It is probable that the Court. wil. 1 sit in defiance of tho obstructionists. The difiieulty .arises through a seel ion of the natives, insisting that the Court shall recognise their claims to land as established, and that these shall be admitted where one tribe has assisted another to defend itself, without occupation. This right was allowed by Sir D. M'Lean, but was repudiated by tlie Court.
TAURANGA. May 7. Captain Morris, M.H.LL, after addressing the electors at Opotiki last night, received a vote of no confidence. <& HLKUKAXCI. Mav 7.
Tins afternoon Sir G. Grey and Mr. Sheehan arrived hern, and we-.ra met by the whole of the Waikatos in an immense multitude with a war dance, Tawhaio leading them. Afterwards the King paid a visit to the whole party accompanying them. Purukutu was leading the soldiers, and looks more ferocious I ban ever. He is armed with a long spear with a, bayonet on it. Sir G. Grey and Mr. Sheehan are now exchanging civilities with the King, ft is said there will lie no more talk to-day. Te In galea u is hero already. He is the King's right-hand man.
SEW PLYMOUTH. May 7. The Urenui Hotel was burnt down last night, owing to the explosion of a kerosene lamp in the bar. The insurance was LBOO on the building and L2OO on the stock, equally divided between the Standard and Imperial Companies.
