WELLINGTON. May 6. Dr. Hector by request, having tester! tlio kerosene by which the late fatal accident was caused, reports, the flashing point of this oil is 105 degrees Fahrenheit, but after it has been warmed to 110 degrees it flashes at 100 degrees or even less. Such oil is therefore petroleum, and dangerous in the meaning of the Dangerous Goods Act, 1869, and under the 14th clause it should not be sold except in vessels marked " Dangerous no light to be. brought near." Thirty-two thousand shares in the Colonial Insurance Company have been applied for here.

May 6. Be Colonial defence, Sir G. Grey forwarded the following resolution of Ministers to the Governor, in reply to the Imperial telegraphic despatch : —"Sir George Gri-y presents his respectful compliments to the Marquis of Nornianbv, and states that tin- New Zealand Ministers reply to Her Majesty's Government that the Colony will undertake the expense of the proposed armament. Her Majesty may ivsr assur d that Her New Zealand subjects will, in the event of any crisis loyally and resolutely in all respects do their duly to their Queen and their country. Sir George Grey requests that the Marquis of Norman by will be so good as to at once telegraph a copy of this memo, to Ht-r Majesty's Government for their information."

NEW PLYMOUTH. May 6. The Supreme Court was opened this morning by Judge Gillies. The following are the cases: for trial':—Samuel Henry Barriball, for unnatural offence ; Mafcarifca, a native woman, arson ; Qninliran, horsestealing ;." George Paveral, hor«estealing ; Lennox, horsestealing. The jury found no bill in Barriball's case. Lennox, for horsestealing, was found guilty. Paveral, horsestealing, pleaded guilty. Sir John Coode leaves by coach, tomorrow, for Patea.

ALEXANDRA. May 6. The premier and suite have arrived here, and have gone on to Kopuakatati as a matter of form, but will return this evening and proceed to Hikurangi overland to-morrow. Mr. Sheehan only went up to Kopua. The canoe has returned. He saw no one. Rewi and Whanui are still at their settlements. Procrastination appears to be the order of the day.

TIMARU. May 7. The Harbor Board, at a special meeting held this morning, decided to call for tenders for the construction of a mole 300 feet long in the harbor, in accordance with Mr. Goodall's plan, as approved of by the Commission.
