RIYERTON. April 29. The excitement here regarding the Longwood quartz reef continues, but nothing is definitely known by outsiders concerning the Hay's claim. Prospect specimens from their claim are gencrally believed to be very rich. A number of capitalists from Invercargill and tlieLakes, including several experienced reefers, are now visiting the ground, and appear satisfied with the prospects. From the number of nvn who have crone there, the whole of the Longwood Ranges ought to be thoroughly prospected this time. Six applications for mining leases have been already registered, and several other applications will be made during the week. A large portion of the ground i 3 held under mi n ers' rights. Great want of pack tracks is felt for the transit of provisions, there being nothing but very narrow and roughly cut bush tracks, along which men can carry but light swags. The distance of the iield from Riverton is fifteen miles —seven by boat up the river, the rest by track. HOKITIKA. April 29. The second trial of Ryan, for the murder of Daniels, commenced to-day, before Judge Richmond. The evidence of the surveyors, the medical evidence, and that of Caldwell and his two sons, has been taken. Nothing new hag transpired as yet.
