(PKR PRESS ABEJTCY.) WELLINGTON. April 24. The salmon recently placed in different rivers in. this district are reported by the settlers who have seen them to be thriving very well. A circular was sent to all the heads of departments, instructing them to inform all officers that they can no longer depend upon the 40th section of the Civil Service Act, 1566, granting a gratuity to their wires and families after they die. The circular adds that it is now open to officers to provide for their wives and families by means of Government life insurance. It
is announced, by Order in Council, that no cadetship in the Civil Service will count j until the cadet receives over LIOO per annum. In reference to a long promised bridge at Napier Heads, it is understood that the Government will subsidise the bridge to the amount of LCOOO, and give the contractor a lease of it for 21 years. _ » DUNEDDST. '. _ April 24. In the appeal ease to-day, Judge Johnston upheld generally the received view that the Tippling Act of George 11. is in force in the Colony. The Act precludes the recovery for liquor supplied in less quantities than twenty shillings worth. * AUCKLAND." April 24. The graving dock will be opened about the Queen's Birthday. It is proposed to name it the Victoria Dock. The arbitrators in the case of Smith, contractor, v. the Government, awarded L 9250 to plaintiff, with costs.

Four war canoes have gqne up. April 25. The' Bank of New Zealand half-fyearly meeting was held to-day. Thei report shows a net profit on the 31st May, after making all deductions, of LB2,sG7jwhich, with the balance from last half-year of | LI7OO, leaves a total of L 84.358, to be disposed of thus :—Dividend and bonus, 15 per cent., L 54,370 ; increase to reserve fund, L 25,000 ; balance to new account, L 4983. The dividend will be payable at the head offices to-morrow. The aggregate balance-sheet shows a debit and credit amounting to L 10,550,000.
CHRISTCHURCH. April 24. The Dog Show to-day was a great success. There were nearly 300 exhibits, including a few from Otago and Nelson. The great majority of the dogs were very well bred, many being exceedingly fine specimens. There were three auction sales of racing stock to-day with a large attendance, but very few sales were effected. were Mireille, to J. H. Lunn, for 70 guiueas ; Standard Bearer, to A. H. Bolleston for 120 guineas ; York, to D. O'Brien, for 330 guineas ; Atalanfca, to A. H. Rolleston, for 130 guineas; Psyche, to Mr. Gilligan, for 37 guineas ; Luna, to H. Oram, for 240 guineas ; Sir Tatton, to D. O'Brien, for 100 guineas ; filly by Traducer, dam Opera, to J. Biabaaon, for 150 guineas ; iilly by Albany, dam Red P>.ose, to H. Redwood, for 35 guineas ; colt by Castaway, dam Patrician, for 30 guineas; Oberon, to Mr. Hitching, for 240 guineas ; Mountaineer, to Mr. Kitching, for ISO guineas ; The Chief, to L. Markey, for 100 guineas. Fishook was passed in at 800 guineas, and Mousetrap at 275 guineas. April 25. In the Resident Magistrate's Court, Peter Pasche, for having a gambling table on the race-course, was sentenced to 12 months' hard labour. The evidence showed that a hollow in the centre of the table contained machinery which enabled the prisoner to stop the revolving needle wherever he wished, and thus swindle the public with impunity. James Ryan, for playing the three-card trick on the race-course was sentenced to nine months' hard labour.
The daughter of the Hon. W. Robinson was married yesterday to the eldest son of Sir Francis Dillon Bell.
A man was buried by a fall of earth in a well, Shand's track, yesterday. The relief party, after three hours' digging, could hear the man speak, but had not, when last heard from, succeeded in accomplishing the rescue.
WANGANUI. April 24. In the Wnnganui Supreme Court to-day, the Grand Jury threw out the bill against Lewis Lyons Levy for arson. A native named Nioti was found euilty of horse stealing. Sentence deferred. A boy named Patrick Lea was found not guilty of indecent assault. Mr. Foulis, late of Edinburgh, has been npP'-hited Inspector of the W:inff.inui Education I'i.-n- ; cc at a salary of L4OO per annumn, and LSO travelling expenses.
