(PER PRESS AGEXCY.) e WELLINGTON. April 17. The evening papers to-day publish the names of nearly all the leading people here, as interested in the new Colonial Insurance Company.
CHIUSTCHURCH. April 18. The entries for the dog show number 300, and include dogs from Timaru, Oamaru, Dunedin, and Nelson. The Marble Company having found extensive reefs of splendid marble in their quarry, have issued a prospectus for an increase in capital to LIO.OOO. Longlands is now a strong favorite at 3 to 1 for the Great Autumn Handicap ; Bide-a-Wee stands at 5 to 2 ; Templeton 5 to 1 ; Ariel 6 to 1 ; and Mavitana 8 to 1. The betting for the Champagne. Stakes is G to 4 against N.ital-or, 2 to 1 against York, 3 to 1 against Merlin, 4 t<> 1 against Nemo, and G to 1 against Atlantic and Rama.
TIMARU. April 18. A man named William Somers, a baker in the employ of Mr. Mende-Ison Morris, Pleasant Point, was burnt to death last night. He set a batch of bread at eight o'clock, and went to bed at nine. The bakery, which was a detached building, was afterwards found to be on lire, and was burnt to the ground. On examination the remains of Somers were found. No clue has been obtained as to cause of the fire. The poor fellow's remains were taken to the Point Hotel, where an inquest will be held. AUCKLAND. April 17. A miner named Michael Collins at Coromanrlel, has received a letter from some London solicitors, announcing that he is heir to a fortune of L 300,000. In the case Arthur v. the Waikafo Steam Navigation Company, a claim for LSOO damages for injuries received from falling down the hold through the alleged negligence of the defendants. Nine of the jury were in favor of awarding no damages. The judge held this to be a verdict for the defendants, and it was entered accordingly.
A young man named James S. Ait-ken. nephew of Mr. Ait-ken, hind agent fell down in an apoplectic fit this morning, ami died immediately. He had been employed as clerk in Hesketh and Richmond's.
Mr. Montaguo M'Muvdo, son of Capt. M'Murdn, of the Mutual Life Association, was thrown from his horse, and sustained a concussion of the brain. It is feared his injuries are fatal. . <j> GRAHAMSTOWN. April 17. A digger arrived in town to-day from the Upper Thames with some very good coai'se gold, and two gold-hearing specimens obtained from a new locality. He has shown them to the County authorities with the intention either of claiming the gold rewaid or obtaining assistance from the Comity in prospecting. Several parlies prospecting are said to have obtained payable returns from alluvial or reef wash. <3> . NELSON. April IS. Sir Geo. Grey addressed a crowded meeting at the Provincial Hall last night, when the substance of bis speech was the. same as that of the speeches delivered in Wellington and elsewhere. At the close of the meeting a vote of confidence was proposed and carried iir.m. rem.. amidst most enthusiastic and prolonged cheering.
