TO THE EDITOR OF THE EVENING MAIL.

Sir—l have boon agreeably surprised to sec in your columns so ninny letters touching upon tin.: early closing system. I am happy to see that one of the principal shops in this town has taken it into consideration ; but [ would surest that those gentlemen should try all in their power to form an early closing association. Tt seems to nie as if the greater proportion of the tradespeople looks to one or two of the principals, as much as to say what are we going to do in the matter ? Vv'lien one than advertisaa to close at a reasonable hour, why don't the others follow their example. ] cannot, sue the necessity of putting it oil' day after day and week after week. Why, if they continue (he same as thoy are doing at present, my candid opinion is that it will all end in smoke. If any one is so busy that they cannot get through their business at a reasonable hour, why don't they put on extra hands, and not make white slaves of those in their employ 1 I quite concur with " I.lmuanitas' " remarks regarding the '"paltry purchases that are made on a Saturday night. My idea is, that a great many come to make the said paltry purchases for a mere excuse to promenade the streets, to see and be seen. Now, Sir, I think if the public would only give this matter a little consideration they would find that they would gain by it, and keep many others from falling a prey to consumption, and other diseases that are brought on by late hours.—l am, itc.
