MR. MASSETT'S ENTERTAINMENT.
A highly appreciative and fashionable audience gathered at the Masonic Hall last evening on the occasion of Mr. Massett's second and last entertainment in Oamaru. In many respects the programme was similar to that presented on Saturday evening, but several fresh readings and recitations were introduced, many of which were new to us. One of these, "The Blacksmith's Story," a descriptive poem of a decidedly dramatic nature, was delivered in a most telling manner, every line of the sad story being given with a depth of feeling that almost made one fancy that the reciter was himself the aorrow-stricken blaoksmith. Two beautiful little poems by Bret Harte, entitled "Johnny's Next-door Neighbor" and " Better in the Morning," were given with exquisite pathos, the reciter speaking the pathetic lines in that peculiarly tender manner which marks all his recitals of such poems. In response to an almost universal request, Mr. Muaaott again lecited "The Tm>\o with the Camelias.," This was again given with great dramatic force, and elicited a genuine round of applause that must have proved highly satisfactory to the reciter, The funny portion of the entertainment was almost the same as on Saturday evening, the only notable change being the introduction of Artemus Ward's experience amongst the Mormons, the Shakers, and the Spirits, Thtwe rendered in a most luun, nravis manner, and created many a hearty laugh, Several new imitations were given in addition to those introduced in his previous entertainment, and created roars of laughter. The whole entertainment passed oil' in a highly satisfactory manner. Mr. Massett left this morning for Dunedin, and wo cs,n confidently promise our Southern friends a treat should they patronise his entertainment.
